These are large typical owls and are endemic to India. Like all owls they have a mystery to them and could fly past you without making the slightest of sound.
It was interesting to learn from a friend that owls were the only birds whose flight produced zero sound. This was tested as an experiment inside a recording studio that could pick up the faintest sound alongside many other birds of different sizes.
Owls were the only ones capable of flying around the room without the ultra sensitive mics picking up the slightest of sound. Hence their reputation of being Ghostly.
In Kerala the mottled wood owl has a rather Mythical touch to it. It is locally called the Kaalan Kozhi, in malayalam Kaalan meaning the diety of death and Kozhi a fowl. This fowl of death is dreaded by locals and hearing their midnight calls are usually associated with to herald immenent death.
However, on the contrary owls are considered to be a sign of good luck and fortune in the north of India. In the west world owls are considered wise but in most parts of India they personify foolishness.
In all, We believe what we are made to based on our culture and beliefs. The truth remains that owls are the same worldwide, a beautiful species of bird that have abilities beyond the understanding of humans - Sanket Reddy
