  • You can have theoretical knowledge of what happened to hibakushas (nuclear bomb survivors) but it’s very different and difficult to hear their story coming directly from them. When I heard Setsuko Thurlow’s story, I couldn’t stop crying. The survivors that are left were children when their whole world and life was changed forever. They have waited 74 years for nukes to disappear because they don’t want anyone else to go through what they had to go through (losing their whole family and friends, being stigmatized by other Japanese people and being rejected from marriages because of that, choosing to hide their past and being obligated to stay silent so as to not lose a wife, a job, everything). This shouldn’t happen ever again and remember: there are no good hands for the wrong weapon. If you have doubts about this, DM me. #Repost @nuclearban with @get_repost

Can you imagine what it was like to survive the nuclear attack on Hiroshima in 1945? What it meant for the people who had to grow up with the terrifying scars - both physical and emotional - of nuclear weapons, and continue to carry that memory with them till this day?

The new documentary “The Nuclear Family,Witness” shares the stories of some of those survivors and explores what the world has learnt from the only country to experience nuclear war. All of this tied in to the family story of the documentary’s creator: @aribeser, one of our fantastic ICAN campaigners!

And the timing couldn’t have been better - ratifying on Hiroshima Day & Bolivia’s National Day showed their commitment to push for a world free from nuclear weapons that are symbols of power, injustice and inequality and say “never again” to what happened in Hiroshima.

Thank you, Bolivian Ambassador H.E. Mr. Sacha Sergio Llorentty Solíz for sharing this powerful message at the signing ceremony in @unitednations.

Who do you think will ratify the Treaty next? Tell us in the comments below! 🎥 : Seth Shelden

  • Many if us have grown weary of America's interventionist policy of the past few decades. With the social and economic ramifications of being world police" finally manifesting, many have opted that we become more isolationist when it comes to world affairs. While such an approach has its merits, it does not excuse anyone of being ignorant of said affairs. Particularly when it comes to a powder keg like Northern India whose precarious situation James Corbett of the Corbett Report has compared to the circumstances that started the first World War. The story begins years ago when the Indian subcontinent had been freed of British rule and the different ethnic groups were carving up territories to call their own. Thise that identified as Muslim moved to the North West and formed Pakistan while Hindus mostly remained in the east. Tensions have to this day remained high between these groups and this is no more easily given example than the region of Jammu and Kashmir. Originally part of an independent entity, their leaders relented to external pressure and agreed to become apart of India even though they were majority muslim. This would be agreed upon with the condition that Jammu and Kashmir receive special status which excluded it from answering to India constitution, allowed for the formation of their own constitution, and allowing only natives of the region to own and occupy local real estate. Up until recently, this agreement has been respected. However, PM Modi of India's Hindu nationalist party, potentially on support of re-election, has opted to remove their special status and subject them to India's and military power. This comes after years of Kashmirs ties to Pakistan and it's housing of terrorist cells and paramilitary organisations that have made multiple attacks against India which have only provoked India into bomb campaigns on Pakistan's countryside as well as a heavy military presence in Kashmir. Kashmir is famous for having the largest military presence of any region as it stand in between three nuclear powerhouses of China, India, and Pakistan who have all fought in the past over border disputes. New legislation to bring Kashmir can be seen as Modi's

The Project
941 or Akula (Russian: Акула, lit. 'Shark') class submarine (NATO reporting name: Typhoon) is a type of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine deployed by the Soviet Navy in the 1980s.
With a submerged displacement of 48,000 tonnes, the Typhoons are the largest submarines ever built, able to accommodate comfortable living facilities for the crew when submerged for months on end. The source of the NATO reporting name remains unclear, although it is often claimed to be related to the use of the word "typhoon" ("тайфун") by General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev of the Communist Party in a 1974 speech while describing a new type of nuclear ballistic missile submarine, as a reaction to the United States Navy's new Ohio-class submarine.

  • Thousands of Russians attended the funerals Monday of five Russian nuclear engineers killed by an explosion as they tested a new rocket engine, a tragedy that fueled radiation fears and raised new questions about a secretive weapons program.

The engineers, who died Thursday, were laid to rest Monday in Sarov, which hosts Russia’s main #nuclearweapons research center, where they worked. Flags flew at half-staff in the city, located 370 kilometers (230 miles) east of #Moscow, which has served as a base for Russia’s nuclear weapons program since the late 1940s.

The state-controlled #Rosatom nuclear corporation said the explosion occurred while the engineers were testing a “#nuclear #isotope power source” for a rocket engine. Local authorities in nearby #Severodvinsk, a city of 183,000, reported a brief spike in #radiation levels after the explosion, but said it didn’t pose any health hazards.>> that’s what they said after the #Chernobyl disaster. Moreover, this accident exposes Russia’s creation of nuclear weapons so powerful that they can encircle the globe and/or reach the #NATO European countries long before anyone could respond. A direct result of trump pulling out of the #INFtreaty armistice agreement that the USA had with Russia to limit the creation of weapons since the #ColdWar

The Hiroshima ICAN Academy took place from July 31 to August 8th! The participants of this intensive program learned about nuclear weapons and security policy, and we hope that each participant will use this knowledge to bring forth an era of peace. The MOU for this partner program was signed by both Beatrice Fihn (executive director of ICAN) and Hidehiko Yuzaki (governor of Hiroshima). 8 of the 15 participants were from nuclear weapon states and 7 were from non-nuclear weapon states.
