----------------------------------------🌼Kumara Purnima🌼is the full-moon day in the month of October-November.Unmarried girls in Odisha perform traditional rituals on this day with the belief of getting ideal life partners.Girls wake up much before sunrise and get dressed to perform the ‘Janhi Osa’ where they offer sun god, palmful of ‘khae’ with ‘janhi’(striped gourd),cucumber,BANANA, coconut, gua(betel nut)known as ‘Anjuli'.In the evening Girls raise the ‘Chanda chakata’ and pray to the moon.Chanda Chakata is a delicacy made up of ‘khaee’,jaggery, banana, coconut, ginger, sugarcane, talasajja, cucumber, ghee, honey and milk & is laid out on a ‘kula’ (winnowing fan)in the shape of a half moon.It is then rolled into fistfuls of balls and partaken of.The moon is the synonymous to a handsome husband that the girls are seeking for themselves.Old grannies are of the opinion that a girl has to see the ‘Udila Janha’ (the fresh moon that has just risen on the horizon)for a young and attractive husband.if one takes too long to see the just-risen moon then an old bridegroom is in their destiny.Puchi khela is the signature Kumara Purnima game.It is played in a squatting position where one’s weight is shifted and balanced from one leg to another rapidly.‘Puchi’ competitions are held in the moonlight and the song Phula Baula Beni is sung.@amiya.lala @trishadivyamohanty

  • KAKERA & GAJAR HALWA

  • After celebrating Durga Puja gloriously for 10 days, we bid a good bye to Maa Durga with a heavy heart. Then we welcomed Goddess Lakshmi with a grandeur In Kumar Purnima (କୁମାର ପୂର୍ଣିମା). Kumar Purnima is an Odia festival in which unmarried girls worship God Kartikeya to bless them for an ideal husband. This festival is observed on the full moon day of Asvina Month. It also marks the beginning of GajaLaxmi Puja in Odisha where we worship Goddess Laxmi, the deity of wealth.
The festival starts with offering Sun God a kula( coconut leaf vessel) having lia/khai (fried paddy) and 7 fruits followed by an aarti. We odias celebrate this festival with great vigor and enthusiasm.
