The people of Odisha in their day to day life observe with austerity a number of Bratas, Oshas and Pujas throughout the year. Odisha, a state in Eastern India, has some unique festivals like the Kumar Purnima, being celebrated today. Kumar- means Youth and Purnima- means full moon night. This is the festival observed by the woman folk of Ganjam in worshipping the full moon at rising. Aswina Purnima is the time comes after completion of agricultural works in the crops fields and the farmers are to worship Goddess Durga and Laxmi for better production. The adolescents (Kumars and Kumaris) celebrate the full day and night in full joy and happiness. On the day of Kumar Purnima Festival girls wake up early in the morning and take bath wear new garments and make food-offerings to the Sun. On this day girls observe fasting and in the evening when the moon rises they again make food offerings of a special variety and take it after the rituals are over. Kumar Purnima gives a superb moon, and so the women of Ganjam worship the moon in the night and call it Chandra Puja or Janha Puja with typical Odia cake named Kakara prepared out of flour of rice and gura. Worshipping Chandra (moon) with Kakara, Chandra Kanti, Bada , Chenna Khaee Chanda etc. is continuing from ancient days. Khae Chanda is a tasty dish made of chhena, mixed with banana, ghee, honey and other things, that is happily relished by one and all! On this festival girls are sung a song and dance and they also play a game known as 'Puchi'. Some people celebrated this day as the birthday of Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth. They worship the Goddess in their homes and playing Pasha (Chess), and other indoor games. ♡
