Stained glass and ornate windows were quite widely used in the bonedi baris. In fact stained glass windows were used in churches, synagogues and mosques built in those times. This probably inspired the affluent Bengalis to have colourful glass decorations over their windows or doors. Seen here is window from Manmathanath Ghosh’s house in Pathuriaghata. Ghosh was known for his contribution to the world of Indian Classical Music. Earlier, only baijis (courtesans) would sing publicly but Manmathanath Ghosh changed the norm by inviting well-known musicians to perform in the Thakurdalan of his home.

  • From a neighborhood that formed my ground to a neighborhood steeped in history. I had landed myself in the dream I dreamt of for seven years.

  • Well, a successful Jorasanko Thakur Bari visit would've made ত্রয়োদশী 2019 a complete win in the books of both @shaunakbhattacharya and me. However, what followed the unsuccessful visit made for a more colourful and covetable memory album.

I mean, riding a yellow taxi, to get to Cafe Coffee O Kobita, after ages made me feel like such a quintessential Calcuttan. And what a wonderful feeling that is.

Asking for Fish à la Meunière at Coffee O Kobita, like a Calcuttan who misses Mocambo but cannot forgive the place for its 2016 atrocities, and then settling for Fish and Chips while cribbing the whole time that the original dish of choice is not available had its own Bangalir "dukkho bilash" charm.

Meandering through old, derelict North Calcutta lanes to get to Shaunak's house while @sudeshnarudradey worked her magic with the camera and clicked some of the best captures of my life was an adventure in its own right.

And last but not the least, indulging in some unadulterated aaddaa with three extremely interesting individuals—Shaunak's mum completing the quartet—while biting into an egg-chicken roll, sitting in the study of an old North Calcutta house can beat any experience hands down any day, any way. Also, stealing a Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne poster from the boy's study gladdened my heart to unfathomable extents!
.
Shaunak, koi baat nahi. Dil chhota nahi karte, Bhole! Hum February mein yeh bhi apne checklist pe tick off karenge aur Pheluda Theme Park bhi! ♥️

  • Pujo Spirit of Kolkata
Saptamir Din(7th Day)
Saptami showed me a complete different side of Kolkata.
We went for the Pujo hopping series of Bonedi Barir Pujo (Traditional household Pujo).
We had to park the car at a distance & then started the never ending walk through the narrow lanes, finally we reached the first Pujo Bari, the moment we stepped into the first house itself my filmy side was wide awake & my eyes suddenly had the sepia mode on, I could see the ladies of the house draped in the gorgeous sarees in Aatpoure style (the Bengali saree draping style) laden with lot of gold jewelery, the men were in white Panjabi dhoti with gold buttons with a very busy look on their faces.. Well all of this was my imagination of the times when these households used to have such grand Pujo during the olden days..now people like us visit these places & try & feel the vintage charm.
We visited some 8-9 such households, some were 150 years old, some 200 & the grandest one was 400years old. Every Pujo had a very interesting story to it or may be over the years the story has been improvised like many other historical places. Some stories were told by the roadside tea vendor, some by a stranger who acted as a guide for us, we even thought he might ask for money for guiding us through those lanes & helping us locating so many Pujo Bari, but strange, he just said thank you to us & left us puzzled, we do have some people even today who do not have selfish motives behind everything. My best time this Pujo & an experience to cherish forever was the Bonedi Barir Pujo series.
I draped a half Handloom, half Gheecha saree on Saptami morning which is a Pujo gift by my Bordi(older sis inlaw) from @shilpoboutique. Accesorised with a simple antique gold ear ring from @womaniya.wow
The day ended with chilled beer, food & lots of discussion about these Pujos at a place in Esplanade which rang some nostalgic bells for Mr. Biswas.

  • Art deco & contemporary society in a frame. Mobile phones have become the 2nd most important thing in our life after breathing😋 We cannot do out with them in our images so may as well accept them whole heartedly☺️
People offering their prayers at the Shovabazar Rajbari at Kolkata which was probably built in the 18th century.
