  • I would love to know what’s going on in that brain.
It’s so obvious interacting with Mantas how intelligent they really are. No other fish displays intrigue and curiosity like Manta Rays do.
Here is a young male flipping upside down and making eye contact with us while gliding along.

  • Cycle of life

This is another post of my trip to Palau last November in the beautiful Palau Siren liveaboard. One of the highlights of the 10-day tour was the bumhead parrotfish spawning. It is really amazing to see around 5 thousand of those creatures together. You need to wake-up really early but it is really worth it.

The spawning takes place not far from the surface so it is very important that no diver tries to go on top of the fish school since the reaction will be that the parrotfish will go deep and you will frustrate the spawning. Obviously before this dive we had briefings by our Siren divemasters and also Matt Boyle our marine biologist from Sam’s Tours / Unique Dive Expeditions @fukculture. They are really the best.

In the picture you can see the spawning taking place on the top-right fish group. What happens is that a female choses a male to spawn, the couple tries to separate from the other fish running towards the surface. The other males chase the lovers in a desperate attempt to fertilise the eggs freed by the female. At the end you may have one female surrounded by 6 to 12 males all spawning together. This is the white cloud (of eggs and sperm) that can be seen in the picture. You can also see some males that were not fast enough following the trail left by the others.

In photography you need sometimes to be lucky and be in the right place at the right moment. However, I have to say that I was positioned below the school (as my divemasters told me) and also I was waiting for the first couple to start running towards the surface before pressing the shutter. So that is why it is very important to learn fish behaviour in underwater photography: you will maximize your chances of being “lucky”. I hope you guys enjoy the image.
