  • I posted a historic map on Reddit (r/Syracuse) and someone asked: โ€œshouldnโ€™t there be a hill by the amphitheater?โ€
โ€ข
Itโ€™s true, today there is a ~60 foot hill between the Fairgrounds and Onondaga lake. On top of this hill sits the St. Joseph Health Amphitheater. But this was not always the case...
โ€ข
The Fairgrounds were built here because there was a great view of Onondaga Lake. Unfortunately, this did not last.

Throughout the 20th century, Syracuse was a hot spot for the production of Soda Ash, an industrial compound. Creating Soda Ash using the Solvay Process creates a lot of waste product. This waste product was dumped into open pit waste beds in the wetlands surrounding Onondaga Lake. (Some actually thought this was a benefit because it killed off the mosquitos!)
โ€ข
Over time, the waste beds became taller as more waste was added. Today, these waste beds make up a substantial portion of the southern shore of Onondaga Lake. You wouldnโ€™t notice them, they look like rocky outcrops and are now covered in top soil. This man-made waste dump is the foundation for the amphitheater.
โ€ข
The cleanup efforts, led by Honeywell, have improved the quality of the lake water itself, but it was decided to leave the waste beds in place.
