  • Why does it take a Black Palm so long to wean? Here’s some insight as to perhaps some reasons why.
Palm parents lay a single egg and raise one chick at a time. They are difficult to study in the wild once the baby fledges, but it seems to take two years or more for the chick to become fully independent. During that time the youngster is learning where to find food, what items are edible and how to manipulate and open the mysterious packaging that everything is hiding in. In parrot species with more than one baby in a clutch or that congregate in flocks, the process is faster because the chicks are learning and watching other adults. What one misses the other doesn’t and they learn and compete with each other. Some species like Greater Sulphurs and Eclectus are far more food motivated and they wean quickly both in the wild and in captivity. It is much easier to wean a baby Palm if there are other babies in the nursery all learning to eat together.
Palms are large birds but they are mostly feathers. Flighted Palms are quite slim and active and it is surprising how little food they actually eat. A chick that is allowed to get hungry will stop looking for food and will beg to be fed. When it’s crop is full it will happily experiment again opening nuts and seeds. They can take anywhere from 5 to 9 months to wean and individuals vary quite a bit with females usually weaning more quickly than males.

  • Bless him he tries so hard 💕
Belli is desperately asking for head scratches but sunshine never wants to.. and I can’t give him any because no way of getting closes to him 💔

See cage post for more info on belli’s departure to understand better 😘 {no sound because @sonymusic are assholes for not letting me have my record player in the back ground 🙄}
