  • When you go on vacation do you pack your schedule or take it slow with lots of downtime?

We prefer lots of downtime for the kids to relax and unwind. It just seems like everyone is in a better mood for sightseeing that way. @resortquestnwfl was a perfect spot for our family to stay when visiting Pensacola because it’s on Perdido Key which is a secluded barrier island away from all the action. We loved the quiet, the beautiful natural setting, and the chance to let our kids be kids before and after heading out to see the area.

And I would be remiss not to mention the free dvd rentals and heated pool overlooking the ocean. But, you know, details... So what about you? Get the most bang for your buck by doing as much as possible, or slow and steady?

  • Expectation: When we're on a boat watching the Blue Angels practice in Pensacola the kids will be in awe and so thankful for that experience. We'll even bring the noise-canceling headphones so they don't complain about the noise! We're so prepared and great parents for giving our children this experience.

Reality: The kids kept asking when we could go back inside the boat's cabin. I was asked for a snack approximately 397 times throughout the half-hour experience. For the majority of the time, the kids didn't even seem to notice that there were planes in the air. One parent was continuously hustling around the boat making sure the toddler didn't go overboard or hug a stranger's legs. I barely got any video or pictures of the Blue Angels, much less the idyllic Instagram shot I had in mind of my 3 kids looking over the side of the boat at the planes in the background.

Redeeming Moment: in the hours and days following the Blue Angels practice, the kids kept talking about how cool it was to see planes flying upside down. So maybe they paid attention after all?

I could go on and on with examples of how I thought travel was going to go, and how the reality of my children as real human beings with real desires and emotions made it a completely different experience.

I'm learning to embrace the reality. That's where the true family memories and vacation lore happen. Those are the stories we'll tell around the Thanksgiving table or on long road trips for years to come. "Remember that time..." stories are usually about what went wrong, not about how we all posed perfectly for an Instagram shot with no whining or complaining, then had a scholarly conversation about what we learned.

And honestly, that's why I want to travel with my kids. There's no quicker way to bond with people than to be stuck in a car or hotel room with them. There's no surer way to create a bond with people than to struggle through tough moments together and laugh about them later. Travel deepens our family bond and makes our story richer.

  • Keys to a successful travel day with kids: - hype it UP. Whatever you’ve got planned for the day, make it the most exciting thing on this planet to your kids. - know that there WILL be whining and complaining. Try not to take it personally. They’ll complain no matter what you schedule. - mix kid activities with adult activities. It doesn’t have to be ALL about the kids, but try to avoid dragging them only to stuff you want to do. - stop and notice what they’re noticing. A park, street art, an acorn on the ground...it’s novel to them. It’s what makes travel a family bonding experience. - you know what I’m going to say next: SNACKS. Always have them handy. Consider like a holster or a tool belt so you can grab them quickly. - genuinely enjoy your kids. Genuinely enjoy the destination you’re visiting.

Pensacola, we love you! Our first day here was full of fun and family bonding!

Fellow travel families: what are your keys to a successful travel day??? #experiencepcola #pcolapresstrip

  • What do you look for in a place to stay when you’re on vacation? (#sponsored)

With 3 little kids, we prefer a place with a separate bedroom so we can put the toddler to bed and still hang out after bedtime. A kitchen is a MAJOR bonus because we like to pack our own food and make our own coffee when we travel.

Our stay at @resortquestnwfl in Perdido Key, FL has been so relaxing. Morning coffee in the kitchen before Lewis wakes up, a place to come back and watch movies when it rains, and the CUTEST bunk beds for the big kids.

If you’re looking for a summertime family getaway in NW Florida, use the promo code BEACHES to get 20% off Resort Quest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals.

What are your biggest priorities when booking accommodations?

  • Wish you were here - @visitpensacola we had a BLAST all weekend long...Thanks for having us! I think one of the best parts about #experiencepcola is there are so so so many diverse things to do...not just beachin’ it all day long. Another plus it’s super drivable from so many southern locations. I’ll be blogging our whole trip this coming week and sharing more of what we did and where we ate! Stay tuned. Happy weekend friends ☀️ #pcolapresstrip

  • #QOTD : what’s your favorite beach?
-
I was so stoked for the #pcolapresstrip because #pensacolabeach is consistently one of my favorite beaches! It’s a reasonable drive from Montgomery, Birmingham, Atlanta, Chattanooga, Huntsville... basically most Southeastern cities! You can #experiencepcola ‘s sugar white sand beaches, the awesome gulf seafood, the historic downtown, boutique shopping... and it doesn’t hurt that I have a ton of good memories here from various trips in the past ✌️@visitpensacola

  • One of my favorite memories is a road trip with my two best friends to Pensacola, Florida. We drive through Georgia, Alabama, and finally Florida, leaving well before the sun came up. We made it in one tank of gas, which was excellent, because we were broke. We picnicked on the beach, eating soggy sandwiches filled with sand. It was the best day of my life up until that point.
Things change, and I’ve been invited back to experience Pensacola in a much more luxurious way, thanks to @visitpensacola

  • Can you see the fish this Great Blue Heron is tracking? It was a gift from a nearby fisherman! We leave Pensacola today, heading on to our next destination. We’ve not had great luck with the weather, overcast at sunrise/sunset every day. Cold and rainy this morning. There is a farmers market in downtown Pensacola, that we will drive by on our way out of town. I wish we could stop and check it out, but we’d have to carry all of our gear with us, which is unmanageable. Downtown Pensacola looked really pretty last night, as we drove through on our way back to where we’re staying. We had a great time here in Pensacola, despite the not ideal weather conditions.

  • Today we had lunch at The Union Public House (@uph_pensacola), and as predicted it was a keto carnivore’s dream! To start we had Beef Fillet Carpaccio, Tuna Tartare (served with chips made entirely from shrimp!), and Scotch Eggs (breaded with pork rinds!). Then we each ordered a 20oz Ribeye with a side of Duck Hearts! OMG! Everything was so delicious! The Ribeye was huge! And we would have struggled to finish it, because it was so amazing (we wouldn’t have wanted it to go to waste!), but our awesome server package it up in a box with ice so we could keep it cool as we weren’t going to be back at a fridge for many hours, so we will bring it along to have with our breakfast tomorrow! 😋😋😋 Seriously, you need to bookmark this post if you ever have a possibility of traveling to Pensacola Florida, you must try this restaurant! @visitpensacola || #experiencepcola #PcolaPressTrip
