  • The Upside review

This comedy drama film is directed by Neil Burger and stars Kevin Hart as a ex con on parole who’s hired to become a live-in caregiver of a quadriplegic billionaire played by Bryan Cranston which leads them to unlikely friendship that helps impacted their fallen lives.
It is a remake of the 2011 French film “The Intouchables.” While this premise could work in an American version as this film does has a heartwarming story but it just wasn’t executed well as I hope for.
I really enjoyed both performances of Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. I think this is Hart’s best performance as a ex con who tries to redeem himself for his estranged family while also developing some serious interest with a help of his wealthy boss. Cranston did good as always as a paralyzed billionaire who’s feeling down but starts to loosen up and get back up with a help of his unlikely employer. Both actors developed a great chemistry as they grown to trust each other and bonded with humor and care.
The direction and screenplay has some heart and humor that’s worthwhile but there are some mishaps that could’ve been a well crafted remake. I find the humor to be a hit or miss that it was funny but it gets dried up. There were some predictability and cliche that rolled my eyes out in disbelief. I felt some of the dramatic scene feels manipulative as they’re trying to get us attached to the characters but it comes out pretty far fetched.
Overall, it’s okay as the remake could’ve done better if the filmmakers didn’t put too much of a American spin to the storytelling and the only thing that saves it was the excellent performances of both Hart and Cranston. I’m gonna give this film a “pencil sketch drawing.”
