The little blue penguins were out and about the night we went to go find them on the beach in Timaru. At 25-40cm, Korora penguins are the smallest in the world, found in many places around New Zealand and Southern Australia. Some time after sunset, they are known to swim up to the rocks or waddle down the beach to their nesting areas. Adults also come ashore to shed their feathers and grow a new waterproof coat. This moult period lasts about two weeks and can happen any time between November and March.
They were ridiculously cute and all the onlookers were very respectful and kept a good distance!!

We love our penguins here in the Waitaki!
Waiting patiently for eggs to hatch 🐣
An incredible trip to Antarctica earlier this month has inspired me to share my photography again and therefore what better place to start than with this shot. A gentoo penguin, amongst 500 breeding pairs on the slopes around Neko Harbour.
The gentoo penguin is the third largest penguin species, known by the scientific name Pygoscelis papua. They live approximately 15 - 20 years in the wild and are particularly distinctive due to their orange beaks and white feather caps.
Unnatural threats negatively affect wild African Penguins. Most of these challenges progress too quickly for penguins to adapt to. As a result, their numbers are decreasing drastically: by 95% over the last century. Read more in our latest blog post. Link in profile.

Two worlds colliding. There are not many places where your flight may be delayed by penguins on the runway. These small Twin Otter planes are customized to land on ice throughout the Antarctic region. I always chuckle when I see this photo, as it seems like the penguins are waiting to board. #penguin#Antarctica#penguins#wildlifephotograph#explore#ice

Yesterday was Penguin Awareness Day, and I didn’t get a chance to post anything, so here are a few shots of the Yellow-eyed Penguins we got the privilege of seeing in New Zealand. Found nowhere else in the world, this species breeds along select coastlines of the South Island. We got to watch over ten of them not-so-gracefully waddle in from the surf and make their way to their nesting sites for the evening. While it was truly a fantastic experience to see them, we couldn’t help but think of the harsh reality that they are currently facing. Yellow-eyed Penguins are listed as endangered and are one of the rarest species of penguins in the world. Due to factors including increasing ocean temperatures, fisheries depletion, and disease outbreak, their numbers have plummeted in the last few decades. According to our guides, conservationists think that the species is likely to go extinct in the next few decades, and some estimate that the Otago Peninsula population will be gone in as little as ten years. It all made me feel extra-fortunate to get to see such beautiful, goofy, awkward, little floofballs, but man it was also depressing.
