Cas had a really rough day at the vet on Wednesday. If you’ve been keeping up with my stories, you’ve seen some progress in his healing. He went in for a dental and I left, thinking he’d be okay. He became very anxious and flipped out. They were unable to sedate him, despite giving him a sedative and gassing him. He still was putting up too much of a fight. Every time they tried to get a vein, the vein would blow. They had to give up before he was completely shot out. His leg is pretty badly bruised and has razor burn as he wouldn’t stop moving and dogs skin is very sensitive. I’ve been applying vetericyn 3x a day and neosporin 1x daily. All of the redness from the burn looks way better and the bruising is started to fade and break up. This was in no way anyone’s fault, just couldn’t get him to settle and stop freaking out. He has terrible anxiety if he thinks he’s being restrained in anyway. I’m sure that this reaction is due to whatever happened when he was hit by a car and needed an amputation. I wasn’t in his life yet, but I know that the experience has heavily traumatized him. Typically when we go to the vet, I stay because I know how to hold (and let go) and settle him back down when he becomes worked up. He’s an amazing dog, but if you have your hand on him and stop petting him, he thinks that’s a restraint and will leave. He’s very sensitive to being inspected and handled. I’ve worked with him for the past 3.5 years and he has come a long way, but this just shows he’s not perfect and sometimes things are just too much for him. Last night I was able to have him lay down and I scraped and cleaned his teeth myself while he was awake. He was perfectly behaved and we saved ourselves from another dental appointment this time. He is very comfortable with me doing pretty much anything to him at this point, but he has to be handled very specifically and I failed him there this time. .

“We need the tonic of wildness...At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.” - Henry David Thoreau
