3059. “I don’t know if it’s from being in restaurants, bartending or being from a different country. I don’t know what it is.” Born and raised in the southern part of Albania, Ardita Balilaj moved with her family to Philadelphia when she was 13 years old and has since been using her emotional intelligence to achieve success. Because she didn’t know anyone at first, she actually started learning Spanish before English because she’d watch hours of soap operas each day. Eventually, though, she settled into the area, did well in school, and got accepted to @drexeluniv. There, she studied Finance, worked as a bartender and gained professional experience by working for the insurance company, ACE Group, during her co-op program. Though she started by making payment collections, Ardita had a skill for asking “Why” and “How” questions and therefore moved into the audit group for her future co-op and into her full-time career. She also had a skill for running reports, though, and as a result soon discovered that being an underwriter seemed like a more profitable career path. Wanting to move into the underwriting side, Ardita identified the leaders in that area of the company and requested time on their calendars to learn more about their roles. Fortunately, one of those people took a chance on Ardita and vouched for her to get an underwriting position. She’s since been working as an underwriter (now for a different company), and though she’s become much more risk-averse as a result, she’s enjoyed the opportunities she’s created for herself in life. Thanks to her career, Ardita is able to satisfy her passion for travel and is also able to start making real estate investments, something she plans to learn more about going forward! So nice to meet you, @dita08! #10kfriends#nyc#fidi#albania#philly#emotionalintelligence#drexel#finance#insurance#underwriting#travel#realestate#investing#meetingpeople
How we met: Ardita heard about my project via one of her friends from Philly and then DM’ed me to meet!

When I first started with the @cityofphiladelphia 2 years ago there was no playbook.
While our community is so rich in history, there wasn’t an effort to capture my home — the birthplace of our nation, our @usarmy, @marines, and @usnavy.
By putting in the much needed work to get our office on track, gathering more resources in/outside of Philadelphia for our Veterans and their families, and developing the network, I was able to connect with @garrett_cathcart from @missionrollcall — a national non-profit that provides Veterans a powerful and unified voice to our communities and leaders.
So that’s exactly what we’re doing. We’re running around Philly this week to as many historical sites and connecting with as many Veterans and their families as possible to make their voices heard.
Our first stop yesterday was meeting with Mike Daly, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the site of the wall.
🤨hmmm🤔...I wonder who was frolicking & ripping up a BULK SIZE BAG of unopened earl grey when I was out?? ...Definitely not the shaking, ears down, grey little guilt muffin named Schnapps👀?!...nah! 🤦♀️☕️ .
This Wisdom Wednesday is dedicated to our amazing community of post secondary partners!
Last Saturday our high school youth had the opportunity to engage with admissions professionals from various educational establishments including HBCUs, two, and four year colleges and universities! ▪️▪️▪️
Jeff Jones of Cheyney University (pictured center), Joseph Corso of the Community College of Philadelphia (pictured right), and Alyssa Liles-Amponsah of Temple University (pictured left) graciously answered student’s questions about what colleges look for in potential undergraduates, provide tips to effectively package admissions applications, as well as explore academic and support programming to best fit our student’s needs. ▪️▪️▪️
Words can not express how grateful we are for your dedication and support! We simply could not do this work without you! 💕💕💕

Subdued in wintry rain.
Each creak in the house
A violin's murmer,
Haunted and haunting.
I remember half-memories,
As they meld into one
Sole reason for un-sleep.
I can see them shape
Into something dense,
Sigh in, sigh out:
There is grace in the
Sound that only half-ice,
Half-rain, can play here
On my borrowed window,
