Discovering the Tutukaka Coast in Winter is a real pleasure. Just 2.5 hours from Auckland, north-east of Whangarei, this is one of New Zealand’s hidden gems. While in Summer it is teaming with people, in August it’s practically deserted.
I spent my teenage years up here every Summer - but appreciate it so much more as an adult.
Matt and I opted to fly to Auckland on @jetstarnz cheapy flights, then hire a car to drive up north. That way, you get around easily - it’s almost impossible to explore without a car. There are several beautiful beaches on the Tutukaka Coast: Matapouri Beach, Wooleys Bay and Sandy Bay.
But this is my favourite - the mysterious Whale Bay. Down a track at the top of a hill, it has crystal blue waters and lush Pohutukawas. The hills feel like a hug. Yesterday we visited and were the only ones on the beach (except for 3 Americans who were just quietly sitting there). Just a reminder to visit beautiful New Zealand and enjoy the natural beauty we have on our doorstep - even in the off season! 🗺
"Yeah, I know I'm beautiful" -probably this young male ~American Redstart~ But just wait: once he molts into his adult orange and black plumage, he'll be even more striking. This bird is fattening up for a trip south to the dry tropics. If he makes it to the Caribbean (🤞), he'll find a wintering territory in vine-hung hammock habitat or mangroves.
