I thought of using this post to compare some of my workflow changes I made over last year and why. And emphasize the advantage of having a non-destructive workflow. So here we go:
2018 Edit: RAW process was Lr with only basic adjustments - white balance exposure, highlights and shadows. Most of the edit was done is Photoshop.
Now (2019): RAW process in Capture One. I do most of the edit now in RAW processors. Reason: Ideally, you should want to make your changes before/during the demosaicing algorithm is run. Demosaicing is the process by which the RAW processors unpack the RAW data and convert to a raster image (tiff/jpeg/psd). Advantage: Much more smoother gradients and transitions from highlights to midtowns to shadows and realistic color changes.
2018 Edit: Skin retouch in Photoshop
Now (2019): No change skin retouch workflow. Ps brush is still the most responsive and precise. Although by having non-destructive workflow both back in 2018 and now I could simply move the retouch adjustment layers (curves) over to the new edit.
2018 Edit: Color toning. Other than white balance all my color toning was in Photoshop
Now (2019): Most of color toning is now in RAW processor (Capture One). Advantage: much more smoother color transitions and minimize the risk of color banding and out-of-gamut colors.
Overall goal in my workflow - Use as less memory as possible (both dynamic memory i.e RAM and storage space). By having an insight of how our tools handle our files under the hood we can get as much as possible out of my RAW files and use as less adjustment layers as possible in Ps and keep things efficient. While still achieving not only desired results but also as high quality as you can.
