  • EVENT OVERVIEW - SIX DAY WAR (2000)

The Six Day War was a military conflict that took place in 2000 between Rwanda and Uganda. It was part of the larger Second Congo War that was ongoing at the time, in which Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and allied rebel groups invaded the Congo in 1998. Rwanda and Uganda originally were closely allied at the beginning of the war, but as time went on, this alliance started to break down and skirmishes between the two would happen occasionally. This war lasted from June 5-10, which coincidentally are the same days the Arab-Israeli Six Day War took place in 1967. The fighting was centered around the town of Kisangani, which at the time was under the joint control of Rwanda and Uganda. Over 6,000 mortar shells were fired on the city over the course of the week. Fighting was concentrated north of the city center as Ugandan forces attempted to advance and Rwandan troops retaliated. It is estimated that over 1,000 troops were killed, with 3,000 being wounded. Many more civilians were killed in the fighting and a large portion of Kisangani was destroyed during the war. Rwanda was the victor, completely forcing Ugandan troops out of the city and capturing some of their senior officers. Although Rwandan and Ugandan forces had fought over the city before, this was the most violent and deadly fighting that happened between the two throughout the Second Congo War.
