  • Our legendary guitar solo of the day is the solo performed in "TENDER SURRENDER" by the legendary guitarist Mr. STEVE VAI.
"Tender Surrender" one of Vai's most popular songs, is a seventh track from Vai's 1995 Alien Love Secrets album. This is of his that blends subtle tones and controlled nuance in a similar style to Wes Montgomery a guitarist known for his octave approach to melody writing. The guitar plays a very sweet, touching part throughout the whole song. It's got a very basic guitar part, with a simple enough song-long-solo, but Vai uses the tempo in his favor, slowing down just as the song is about to flow to the next part. Steve Vai’s iconic guitar tone has been an inspiration for guitarists around the world for a few decades now. Steve Vai’s guitar rig is just as complicated as his guitar playing. His constantly evolving rig is quite complicated. It’s impossible to nail exactly what makes that Vai tone based on his live rig. He told the story behind this guitar-based instrumental: "I was sitting and recording something in the middle of one of my records - I always keep some sort of a documenting device around. I felt this urge to just play and to get out of the way, and I hit the first chord and I sang the melody, and just fished for it. Once it's there, it's almost like low-hanging fruit. So then I had this cassette with me singing just the first verse melody and the chord changes, and I knew that it had some energy to it. There was a presence to it. So I just put it on the shelf, and it was yelling at me for about ten years. Finally when I listened back to it, I said, 'I know there's a beautiful song in there,' so I completed it, and then when it was done, I listened to it, and it told me its name". 🤘🎸

  • Let's Wish A Happy Birthday to our great guitarist Mr. JAMES YOUNG born November 14, 1949 is a guitarist, singer and songwriter who is best known for playing lead guitar in the American rock band, STYX. Young began playing keyboard and piano at the age of five. He attended Calumet High in Chicago and learned to play clarinet and guitar during those years. In 1970, Young joined the band TW4 while a student at Illinois Institute of Technology, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering. That band later became the first incarnation of Styx. After Styx's initial breakup in 1983, Young released the solo albums City Slicker (1985 with Jan Hammer), Out on a Day Pass (1988), and Raised by Wolves (1995 with James Young Group). He was the only original member left in the Styx's lineup and has appeared on all Styx albums. Young tends to write the more hard rock pieces for Styx. He is best known for "Miss America" and "Snowblind". Most of James Young's guitars follow a pretty basic formula: S-style with some added bells and whistles. And our great guitar solo of the day is the solo performed in "RENEGADE" by the great guitarist James Young. "Renegade" is a 1979 hit song recorded by the American rock band Styx. It was on their Pieces of Eight album. It reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1979. Although songwriter Tommy Shaw and fellow Styx guitarist James Young usually played lead guitar on their own compositions, Shaw asked Young if he could take the solo on "Renegade". Young agreed, and later returned the favor by allowing Shaw to play lead on his "Half-Penny, Two-Penny" on the Paradise Theatre album. 🎂🎸

• Howling Sycamore — Seven Pathways to Annihilation
__________
Midnight Review:
I’ve said it before, but I will reiterate: generally, here at Midnight Reviews, we try to review albums we like. Usually, we here something and it catches us in a certain way, more often than not, positively, and we are inspired to write about it. Our notion is why spend more time hating things and taking about things we hate when we could use our powers for good and talks about stuff we like or even love. We understand that most reviewers don’t take this stance, specifically in reference to the website that refers to something a devil wields. That being said, we do write negative reviews sometimes. This is not one of those times.
Howling Sycamore features vocal melodies that are strange and twisting that call to mind the mid and lower registers of Cedric Bixler-Zavala. These vocals soar above intricate, shredding guitars. There is a distinctly harsh edge to their sound that I am on board with, as if The Mars Volta decided to incorporate some black metal into their sound. The stellar dark fantasy artwork might be one of the best covers of the year, if not the best. It’s the kind of style that artistically, lyrically, and sonically that reminds me of a glorious sci-fi concept album. Seven Pathways to Annihilation is really quite wonderful.
