So yesterday was my first official day on the Way of St James. The first picture was taken by 2 ladies from Bellville. I had just bought my walking sticks and figuring them out when I thought I heard Afrikaans. Completely bewildered, I turned around and frantically asked them, perhaps a bit rudely, "Het julle nou Afrikaans gepraat?!" After all the new sights and experiences it was comforting to hear a familiar language and have a chat for a few minutes. I saw them on and off again along the way but they stayed behind at an albergue 8km outside St Jean Pied De Port (starting point). A few kilometres after starting I saw this lady and her dog, carrying its own bags, and just had to take a picture. The woman laughingly agreed and a few minutes were spent trying to get Buddy to look at the camera. Most of yesterday's route looked exactly like the 3rd picture, rolling green hills dotted with red-roofed houses and livestock. If you zoom in on the 5th picture between the two bushes, it shows how far and low St Jean is and how far I had walked and climbed at that point. Not yet even a third of that day's distance. I was starting to freak out a little because the brutal hills and climbs just wouldn't end and my body was in a lot of pain, when a wonderful Slovenian couple invited me to walk with them. It was Ivar's 7th Camino and Katinka's first, but in broken English and a little German we managed to get along splendidly and the last 8 kilometres flew by. We picked up a few stragglers along the way and together we got to our beds for the night, absolutely exhausted but generally in good spirits. The first day was the hardest of the whole journey but I made it through with just a little sunburn and sore cheeks from smiling so much.

#triathlon#triathlontraining#swimbikerun#garmin#nike#ariege#pyrenees#running#auzat
