Pancake came to the vet clinic I work at as a stray. He was unable to stand, falling to one side constantly. Despite this, he was eating and drinking well, and LOVED attention.
The vets quickly diagnosed a fracture to his pelvis. It was quite a bad break, however despite this he was doing remarkably well even before we had given him pain relief.
We had to manage his pain until we found an owner. Nobody came forward. We contacted a bunny rescue who was prepared to take him on. Our vets believed that with pain relief and strict rest, he would heal, with the view to do surgery if it was needed.
In the time it took to organise his place at a sanctuary, I fell in love.
Considering his special needs, I would be able to get him to vets at the drop of a hat since I’m there every day, and can provide him whatever he needs. We would be able to monitor his progress closely.
And so, I brought the little baby home.
He fit right in. He loved his cuddles, he loved his medications, as he grew stronger he didn’t quite love the strict rest but lots of veggies made up for it.
It wasn’t long before he was able to stand.
And then hop!
And now, 4 months on, you’d be hard pressed to try and stop him!
Repeat xrays show the hip socket has been decimated by the fracture, so a femoral head excision surgery could be an option, however, it has otherwise healed up well. Surgeries on these little guys are not to be taken lightly. Pancake does not seem to mind his disability and binkies his way around the house happily. His leg sticks out at an angle so we are still keeping a close eye on it, but he is not letting it stop him from his antics! From homeless and squashed to king of the house, Pancake is the softest, sweetest guy, and loves everyone! We’ve made this page to document his life, as it was so close to not existing.
