  • Augustin Lesage (1876-1954)
Tapping into the beautiful spiritualism of Augustin Lesage. The son of a coal miner, he was working in the mine before he was a teenager. At age thirty five he heard a voice in the darkness of the mine. The voice told him that he would become a painter. Nothing about his life up until that time indicated any aptitude, interest, exposure or connection to art. He had doubts at first. Voices reassured him that, with their guidance, he would become a painter. The voices eventually told him what to paint, what materials to use and where to get them. Lesage came to believe one of the voices was the spirit of his little sister, who had died at the age of three. He claimed to never know what he was going to paint. Instead he became the instrument through which the spirits expressed themselves. He made about 800 works of art. Most include elaborate symmetrical structures. Many reference Egyptian art and culture. All have a transcendent beauty that is not of this world.

  • Horace Pippin (1888-1946)
“The Getaway” 1939
Oil on Canvas 24.5” x 36”
Philadelphia Museum of Art
Horace Pippin loved art as a small child. But he went to work young and the demands of economic survival pushed art out of his life for a time. The first World War came along and Pippin joined the Harlem Hell Fighters. He was shot by a sniper and lost the use of his right arm. He found painting again, as a form of therapy. He would place a brush in his right hand, and used his left arm and hand to move and manipulate the right arm and hand. The art became therapy in other ways as well, giving purpose to his life and allowing him to work through the trauma of war and his injury, and the reality of racism in America.

  • Pro tip: I always record myself while I’m jamming. You don’t want to have to STOP to START recording and kill your vibe. Side note- I sort of want to get a vintage tape recorder and do this all the time ..
