  • This was my fourth Sarah Waters book and I’m still waiting for her to recapture the magic of Fingersmith - but I have it on good authority that Tipping the Velvet is her best, the one book of hers I have yet to track down! That’s not to say Affinity isn’t an enjoyable read, I always find Waters’ prose a joy to read, it just wasn’t amazing.
.
Margaret is a 30 year old ‘spinster’, living out her days idle, suffering with mental health problems as everyone around her seems to be living their best life. When she decides to become a ‘lady visitor’ at Millbank Prison, she’s thrown into the trajectory of enigmatic spiritualist Selina Dawes. Whether Selina is a prodigy or a crook, no one can tell, but her allure is undeniable and Margaret soon finds herself under Selina’s spell.
.
Let’s address the ‘sexy’ claim on the front - the romance in this one is definitely a slow-burn and Waters (disappointingly) keeps it rather conservative, but damn if it isn’t well written. I couldn’t help but sympathise with poor Margaret (the woman just need something to go right in her life for once!) and her infatuation is clearly felt.
.
Now for the ‘spooky’ - I very much enjoyed the ‘spookier’ side of the plot, with the flashbacks to Selina’s days as a practising spiritualist, but it is far from actually spooky. Atmospheric, yes! And I liked the exploration of Millbank, which was a real gaol for women in Victorian times - prisons are always fascinating settings for fiction!
.
The ‘stylish’ I can only wholeheartedly agree with, as I’ve mentioned I can’t fault Waters’ writing style for anything! Overall I’d say it’s a solidly ‘good’ read, nothing life-changing but an enjoyable tale!

  • You weren’t there for me when I was afraid but I can only thank you for leaving me alone in the dark because it taught me how to walk alone in an empty street without any guidance and still find my way back home. You left me to take care of myself when all I needed was a hand to hold but thank you for teaching me how to hold my own hand and how to ease the pain you put me through.

You weren’t there for me when I wanted to lean on you but thank you for showing me how to lean on myself, thank you for forcing me to solve riddles and answer questions without your help. Thank you for showing me nothing because you made me see everything.
You weren’t there for me when I was broken but I can only thank you because it taught me how to heal myself in ways you would have never known. It challenged me to work on myself so I don’t ever need you or ask for your help or ask you for favors. It pushed me to be the person I wanted you to be but most of all, it made me immune to your pain. You don’t get to me anymore. You can’t break me anymore.
You weren’t there for me when I needed your love but I can only thank you because you taught me the lesson that keeps saving me, the lesson that makes me face all obstacles with tenacity, you taught me the importance of self-love and the importance of tuning out the naysayers and the haters and the nonbelievers. You weren’t there for me when I needed your love but you showed me that loving myself is the only way to get by. It’s the only weapon I need to fight your battles.

I’m not your victim. I’m not the result of your mistakes. I just took all the mess you made and created a masterpiece. You weren’t there for me but I can only thank you because if you were, I wouldn’t be who I am today and that would have been the biggest loss of all.

  • Currently reminiscing about some favorites I read earlier in the year...and others that I didn’t have a chance to get to (thanks to the tagged publishers for the free books)! I’m definitely adding LOST CHILDREN ARCHIVE and THE COLLECTED SCHIZOPHRENIAS to my 2020 to-be-read list. ✨

What are some books you guys wanted to read this year but ended up not?

•
»🇬🇧Do you read more during the summer or during the winter?🤔😊»
•

  • #ad Very important question: jam or cream first? 😉 Thankfully Adam and I agree that it’s always cream first and then jam, I’m not sure that kind of breach could be reconcilable! We both LOVE afternoon tea, but much prefer doing it ourselves at home because a) more pocket-friendly and b) no one judges you for how much jam and cream you pile onto your scone. For a little added luxury this Christmas, we’ve been indulging in Mrs Bridges jams and preserves - they come so smartly wrapped so they make the perfect Christmas gift, and of course taste amazing! 😍
.
Definitely something you’ll want to find in your stocking on Christmas morning!

Recomendo vivamente!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cosa state leggendo al momento?

  • Girl In Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow

RM 5

After surviving a suicide attempt, a fragile teen isn't sure she can endure without cutting herself.

Seventeen-year-old Charlie Davis, a white girl living on the margins, thinks she has little reason to live: her father drowned himself; her bereft and abusive mother kicked her out; her best friend, Ellis, is nearly brain dead after cutting too deeply; and she's gone through unspeakable experiences living on the street. After spending time in treatment with other young women like her—who cut, burn, poke, and otherwise hurt themselves—Charlie is released and takes a bus from the Twin Cities to Tucson to be closer to Mikey, a boy she "like-likes" but who had pined for Ellis instead. But things don't go as planned in the Arizona desert, because sweet Mikey just wants to be friends. Feeling rejected, Charlie, an artist, is drawn into a destructive new relationship with her sexy older co-worker, a "semifamous" local musician who's obviously a junkie alcoholic. Through intense, diarylike chapters chronicling Charlie's journey, the author captures the brutal and heartbreaking way "girls who write their pain on their bodies" scar and mar themselves, either succumbing or surviving. Like most issue books, this is not an easy read, but it's poignant and transcendent as Charlie breaks more and more before piecing herself back together.

This grittily provocative debut explores the horrors of self-harm and the healing power of artistic expression. (author’s note) (Fiction. 14 & up)

  • Stop accepting excuses for bad behavior thinking that one day it will change. It has been said that when someone shows you who they are, you should believe them the first time. That is not to say that people cannot grow. But when someone hurts you, when they disrespect you, when they disregard you, time and again, that is not love. You deserve to be heard and seen and cared for—well.

Stop making yourself small to make other people feel more comfortable. The people who are going to judge you are going to judge you no matter what you do. The people who are going to judge you are going to judge you because they’re too afraid to live big themselves. Playing small helps no one, least of all yourself. You are the only you there is, you are the only person who has your gifts; you are here to share them. You are here to live out loud. You are here to live large.

Stop settling for less in hopes that one day it will become more. Our time here is precious and life is often too short. You are worthy and you are worth being shown up for. You are worthy of a mad kind of magic, you are worthy of something as wild as it is pure. You are worthy of the best—you are worthy of everything.

Stop giving your big love to people who don’t earn it. Your love is not a toy for people to play with and come and go as they please. Your love is not a free thing that everyone gets to take a slice of whenever they want. Your love is brave and brilliant and powerful and invaluable and the only one of its kind in the world; you deserve someone who recognizes that. You deserve what is raw and real—you deserve to be deeply loved.

  • Spoiler alert: part way through this book Ronson reassures you that if you’re starting to wonder whether you’re a psychopath, you’re probably not a psychopath. I for one was very relieved!
📚
This is a fascinating exploration of psychopathy, how it is diagnosed and treated, and how surprisingly prevalent psychopathic traits are in some of the most powerful people in our society. It’s a warm and funny book which raises serious questions about how we define normal and acceptable behaviour, and how we treat those who fall outside those norms. Among other people, Ronson meets the influential psychologist who developed the Psychopath Test, from whom he learns the art of psychopath-spotting. You’ll definitely want to try it out on your friends/family/horrible ex/awful boss...

  • Good morning lovely people. How is your weekend going? Yesterday had me smiling because one of my friends told me she’s going to start reading the Throne of Glass series! So cool when your online world collides with your real world and people actually become interested in the books you talk about lol.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think I’m going to read the prequel, Assassin’s Blade, before I continue onto book 6, Tower of Dawn. Is that a good plan?

  • BOOKSTASORCIER tâche 2
.

  • Hat es bei euch schon geschneit? ♡
↟↟
Einen schönen Abend euch! 💞💫
