Isabel part 3 : The political unification of Spain will, however, take a long time to obtain. Each of the two kingdoms maintained its own institutions and were ruled by its ruler (Ferdinand will never have official authority over Castile). Eager to complete the Reconquest, the two sovereigns succeeded in reconquering the kingdom of Granada, the last Muslim bastión in Spain. This war, begun in 1482, will prove long, difficult and expensive. Isabelle took a close interest in this campaign and in 1491 settled her camp in Santa Fe, not far from Granada, which fell on January 2, 1492.
It is also against the advice of her councillors that she helped Christopher Columbus to find a sea route to go to India through the west.
With the discovery of America started the creation of the spanish Empire
The other major work of her reign was the religious unification of her kingdom around Catholicism. As soon as she ascended the throne, she took discriminatory measures against the Jews, who were forced to carry a circular yellow piece on their clothes (Louis IX had taken the same measure), which led to the edict of 1492 expelling them from the Kingdom, this was how the Sephardic Jewish communities (ie "of Spain") were distributed all around the Mediterranean basin.
There followed an economic crisis quite simular as of the one suffered by the Kingdom of France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The queen's main motivation was to undo the "bad example" that this community gave to the conversos, these converted Jews. The Church mistrusted them, the queen too, so she asked the Pope for permission to create an Inquisition in Castile that was led by the Dominican Torquemada in 1483., For Muslims people, her policy passed from a total tolerance (thus to the fall of Granada, they could freely practice their religion) to a progressive hardening under the impulse of Cardinal Cisneros which results in their expulsion from the kingdom in 1502.
