Residing in Australasia, the Taipan is considered the most venomous snake on earth. To date, there are 3 identified species of Taipan: Inland, Coastal and Western desert Taipan. These are slender, fast moving snakes, part of the Elapid family. Although Elapids have short front fangs, the Taipan has long fangs capable of injecting large doses of venom. The Coastal Taipan is the longest Elapid found in Australia, however the Inland species is considered more deadly. Inland taipans are highly shy species and would attack only if there is no escape route available. However, in the event that they do get defensive they are capable of producing venom that can kill up to 220000 mice in a single bite. The venom of the Taipan is predominately neurotoxic which affects the nervous system. However in addition, they have pre and post-synaptic neurotoxins which cause irreversible paralysis, hemotoxins which affect blood clotting, and myotoxins which cause muscle paralysis and ultimately respiratory failure. Their venom is extremely fast acting and without antiveom, death is inevitable. However due to their shy nature and lack of confrontation with humans, the Taipan is not considered as lethal as other species such as the Black mamba, cobras or brown snakes.
By far the most elegant and beautiful snake in Australia, the Taipan should be left alone and treated with respect or else consequences will be severe.
