I finished the video game Return of the Obra Dinn yesterday. It’s a game with 1-bit graphics from early computers which both ties in to a wave of visual nostalgia for early game design but also mimic the type of illustrations which were included in nostalgic retellings of seafaring life, like these woodcuts from Newfoundlander Will Barnes’s 1930 autobiography, done by Francis Sheilds. It’s a great mystery game, easy to play but difficult to solve. I would recommend it to anyone but maritime historians will find a lot to love about being able to “walk” around an early 19th EIC merchant vessel. .
