🤔 Do you have lower back pain? Been told you have one leg longer than the other? Or feel your hip or lower back is always “out”? Then this may help out
📌 The quadratus lumborum is a large muscle connecting from the pelvic bone to the spine which contracts to hike the hip or bring the pelvic bone diagonally up and toward the spine
⬅️ A couple weeks ago we covered how to stretch this muscle which is beneficial for some people with lower back pain - but there are others who would benefit more from strengthening it than stretching it
🤔 When may it be beneficial to strengthen the quadratus lumborum?
1️⃣ The most general guideline I think I can give is if you present with one sided lower back pain that runs along the path of the muscle (it connects diagonally from the pelvic bone up toward the spine & is fairly close to the spine itself) & notice your pelvic bone tends to “drop” down a lot on that side. This -could- indicate the muscle is fatiguing out, is too weak to handle the demands placed on it, or you have adopted a movement pattern which puts it on a sustained stretch that it may not be a big fan of
2️⃣ Another indicator could be that you tried stretching the muscle consistently and things either worsened with stretching or there was no effect
🤔 Now. How does the muscle play into leg length discrepancies?
📌 I plan to do an entire post going more in depth on this but the short of it is that -very- rarely do people have a true leg length difference. In most cases it’s actually an illusion of discrepancy created by differences in muscle flexibility, recruitment pattern, etc
📌 The QL is one of the big players that can create that illusion since it serves to hike the hip up. What this can mean is that if the hip is hiked up really high on one side it could be the QL is tight rather than the leg being short. Likewise if the hip is really low on one side it could be the QL is too weak or too long causing that - & in that case strengthening the muscle will often be helpful to “fix” that apparent discrepancy

🔥BREATHING AND MOVEMENT 🔥
“The importance of diaphragmatic breathing on functional movement. Inefficient breathing could result in muscular imbalance, motor control alterations, and physiological adaptations that are capable of modifying movement.”
-2014 Helen Bradley, PT, MSc and Joseph Dr. Esformes, PhD, CSCS
When it comes to joint movement our 🧠 brain gets continuous afferent feedback from the receptors embedded within the articular capsule 📚 When we don't explore a joint's workspace to it's full potential, the receptors in those areas of an articulation will provide limited or no sensory feedback

Slowly and gently move into each of the #yogaposes below. Once you've settled into the full pose, focus on slow, controlled, and deep breathing from your belly, inhaling to a count of five and exhaling to a count of three. Take five to 10 deep and slow breaths in each pose (on both sides when applicable) before moving onto the next. 🏃♀ #stretch#stretching#wellness
The average breath rate is up to 12 times per minute and many of us breathe even faster.
Rapid, shallow breathing can reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the blood which causes the arteries to constrict, reducing the flow of blood throughout the body.
When this constriction occurs, even though the lungs are breathing in more oxygen than the body needs, the brain and body will experience a shortage of oxygen.
This lack of oxygen can play havoc with the sympathetic nervous system, making us feel tense or anxious and less likely to think clearly.
Emotional & Psychological Grounding: means to bring your focus to what is happening to you physically, either in your body or in your surroundings, instead of being trapped by the thoughts in your mind that are causing you to feel anxious or unfocused.
Grounding is so important in massage therapy, as a therapist I use different techniques to ground myself before entering the treatment room. I use grounding techniques with clients to help reduce their stress and anxiety. I know I am successful when I see a client with high energy entering the space, move into a calm and sedative state in their treatment.
As a client the best way to ground yourself during treatment is to be present and focus on your breath. Just like in yoga, taking this time to think about proper diaphragmatic breathing (aka Buddha Belly Breath or Pranayama). As well, your appointment is YOUR treatment time. Which means it is up to you whether you would like to chat or take the time to reflect in silence. Do what works for you.
Share a reaction in the comments if you would be interested in a video on diaphragmatic breathing! 💙

I have to ask the question... what are you doing to work on your wellness??? Do you eat well? exercise?, take vitamins? Use essential oils?
How about visit to Chiropractors? RMTs? Or other holistic healers? If so which ones and why?
Tonight we had 3 kids under 14 at the clinic recieve treatment. It truly is one of the most honoring experiences for us as massage therapists to be a part of. ❤
Often you can get in a full body treatment done in 30 minutes and the benefits and effects on them is infinite.

The weekend is almost upon us and this is how we deal: MOVE!
Pilates/yoga type things: finally we have THREE different teachers at Aloft who are all super excited about #nutritiousmovement and how it can change your life in tiny ways that lead to big ways!
Classes coming up:
Thursday 7pm Week-ender with Maureen (that’s right, your RMT will be teaching you Pilates!) Friday 10am Pilates for nerds with Maureen 🤓
NEW! Monday 1:30pm Pilates for EveryBODY with @move.be.moved (we hear she is worked up about keeping your feet happy in all this snow!) **Get ready to get tapped into your nervous system and feel a shift!** As always, get in touch with us to save your spot in class. Our room is small but mighty, and we keep the classes small so you get the attention to detail that makes it all worthwhile. 💜
If you take care of your body from the inside out, then it will thank you. Did you know that many foods in our western diet are actually inflammatory? 😳 This may cause us to experience even more pain!! Eeeeek!! So if you’re not feeling so hot and you’re wondering why... maybe consider your diet! I’m no nutritionist, but I do believe that you really can’t go wrong with nutrient dense whole foods. If I can’t find the time to make myself something nourishing, then I love to grab a juice. These @thehabitproject juices are seriously delicious and energizing! Great for a mama on the go like myself.🥕🍋 Just like anything else in life, you have to make healthy habits work for you. If it’s not convenient, then you aren’t going to stick to it. That’s just a straight up fact. 🤓
Find something that feels and tastes good to you! Just one little change can go a long way. ⭐️
Come gather as a community and be held by the New Moon.
Keri and Jenika will be offering a group meditation and hands on Reiki energy healing. This is an opportunity to open your heart, set some goals and remove any blocks that are obstructing your path to your most blissful self.
This is the second last New Moon of the year as we ramp up into a new decade - now is the time to unbridle what you've been withholding.
Let go. Unfurl.
This is intentionally a small, intimate group to allow time, energy and attention to each individual.
Come in comfortable clothes, well hydrated and ready to relax. If you have one available bring a journal and you may also want to be mindful of avoiding any intense or strenuous activities afterwards. Self care is a priority.

Stretch those forearms!
This is another favorite for me, I know I may have said that before about a few others but this stretch is tops too!
First pic: forearm extensors stretch. Remember to not put to much pressure on the radio-carpal joint at the wrist. Bring your body back ever so slightly to feel the stretch through the forearm extensors.
Second pic: forearm flexors stretch. Again, gently lean your body back until you feel a stretch.
Remember with all stretching:
- BREATHE - hold each stretch for 20 seconds, release and repeat x2
- no bouncy movements - this stretch can be performed bilaterally at the same time
- stay hydrated
What happens in the treatment room in between clients. There are days where I’ll see 6 clients back to back. When I can catch a break, I take the opportunity to move this body every which way so I can keep on keeping on!
Met with a great group of students today @sutherlandchanschool for a lunch and learn demonstration of biomechanical bodywork for RMTs. Getting the word out: save your body, improve your practice and excel in your career. So much of this comes from how you use your own body in session.
“Whenever you feel like you’re moving a thousand miles a minute trying to achieve your goals, you need to learn when to take a break. It can be easy to caught up in your ambition a little too much.” #WellnessWednesday
plyometrics, the Acceleration is increased which leads to target involuntary neuromuscular and central nervous system processes.
To perform a depth jump you stand on a box, step off, hit the ground, and immediately jump up as high as possible at ground contact. You should gain energy from the impact that you absorb, stabilize, and transfer to your muscles and tendons for a more explosive jump.
A drop jump is just the landing portion of a depth jump. You simply step from a box and "stick" the landing.
It has been stated that an athlete should be able to squat 1.5 x times their bodyweight before performing shock plyometrics in order to avoid injury and optimize progress. One thing that must be made clear is that these training methods originally called for box heights of 1 meter or more. When absorbing the force from this type of landing it is necessary to have a high level of strength. Realize you probably won't get much benefit from any plyometric exercises until you have a base level of strength. However, even little kids jump off of playground equipment and furniture all day long without injury. My recommendation is that you should not perform depth jumps from a box height of greater then 18 inches until you can squat 1.5 x or more your bodyweight. However, it is perfectly fine to perform drop jumps from a height equivalent to your best vertical jump regardless of your strength levels. In fact drop jumps combined with general strength training are a great tool to not only increase your eccentric strength and ability to deal with high forces, but also teach basic movement mechanics with force.
