Basilica of Saint-Denis.
This abbey is one of the most important buildings in human History.
The original church was built in Merovingian times to host the tomb of Saint-Denis, first Bishop of Paris, becoming an important abbey in terms of prestige.
In the 12th century it acquired a big influence in the kingdom under the leadership of the abbot Suger.
He decided to build a new building, a basilica that is widely regarded as the first gothic building as a whole (competing with Sens cathedral), although it was really a combination between bright solutions and some elements that had been already used before.
The first element to be built was the façade that we can see here. The Romanesque essence is still present, although there are some key innovations that became common in Gothic art like the iconographic program, big buttresses separating the naves or a rose window inside a square frame.
Suger then took in 1140 the task of building a new choir with the idea of making a brighter and more luminous ambulatory. To do that, he combined elements already existing in Romanesque art (flying buttresses, pointed arches or rib vaults) that together created a new space.
A new nave was later built in the 13th century in a Rayonnant Gothic style that replaced the old Romanesque one.The upper section of the choir was also rebuilt in this style, although the chapels of the ambulatory are still the ones built by Suger.
In the 11thC, the Abbey had become the burial place of the French kings,a tradition that was kept until the end of the Monarchy with sumptuous graves that can be visited.
One of the original towers was lost. It was dismantled in 1846 to be later reconstructed, something that, after several failed financial attempts, will probably begin during the next year. #travel#france#francetourisme#france4dreams#france_focus_on#hello_france#french_paradise#francemylove#explorefrance#patrimoine#patrimoinefrancais #topfrancephoto#churchmypassion#church#monumenthistorique#architecture#gothicarchitecture#saintdenis#basiliquesaintdenis#seinesaintdenis#wu_france#jaimelafrance#super_france#total_europe#art#europe_pics#bns_france#ig_france#histoire#history

Happy Feast Day
Died around 270
Feast Day: October 9
Patronage; France, against #headaches , frenzy and possessed people. #SaintDenis , bishop, and martyr, is the patron of France and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. He was beheaded together with his two deacons in connection with the Decian persecution of Christians. After his head was chopped off, #StDenis is said to have picked it up and walked six miles, preaching a sermon the entire way. #Portraitsofsaints#Feastday#Catholic #Catholicsaint#Catholicart #Catholicmen
