His father had been a rich silk merchant who had spoiled him. He was baptised Giovanni di Bernardone but for some reason his parents called him Francesco (which means frenchman). He had loved the pleasures of life before he found religion. He had his first visions in his late twenties where he was told to repair the church. He took that literally and started repairing or restoring derelict churches but also renounced his wealth. He started wearing a robe of coarse wool like those worn by the poorest peasants. His piety started to attract followers. He also preached in a way that laymen could easily understand, and always in the local language (as apposed to latin). That made him a popular preacher even though he was never ordained as a priest. Eventually he founded several new religious orders, the most famous being the Franciscan order. He became most famous because of the stigmata or the wounds of Christ that he received later in life. In this painting the stigmata can’t be seen. Instead the focus is on purity, simplicity and faith. The robes are torn, patched up and frayed at the edges. We can barely see his eyes, but if you do look closely enough you can see that he is in religious ecstasy. He might be praying or he could be looking at a vision. I love how Zurbarán used so little colour to express so much.

Bom dia!
consolar que ser consolado;
compreender que ser compreendido;
