  • Happy Birthday Madi!
Madi is short for Marisol, which directly translated means “sea and sun” (Mar y Sol). This sweet lady happens to love the sea and sun, so with the complete creative freedom she offered me, I made her a cake to reflect that part of her. I chose sand dollars not knowing they hold special meaning to her. It’s those moments of truth and connection that keep me creating these cakes. Thank you for sharing your light and being a champion of my work, Madi.

  • In California sand dollars were smaller & I could never figure out why anyone would ever break them to get the doves—that didn’t look much like doves to me.
In Florida sand dollars are huge & mostly broken anyway. I found a nice 1/2 of a sand dollar today with 2 doves that were easily extracted 🙂 They look like doves 🙂

  • Our little trip to Fort Bragg was perfection—we had sunshine, beautiful warm beaches, and our dreams come true—

Mike and I have a bit of history here in this beach town. Three years into our marriage, we took a trip to a small beach house just outside of Fort Bragg.
We had just begun the process of prepping for IVF, yearning to start a family of our own! Excited, nervous and giddy, we were ready to relax on this little vacay. (Since, Mike has Cystic Fibrosis—a genetic disease affecting the lungs among other systems—I had to have labs to ensure I didn’t carry a mutation of CF, for if I did, we would have a 50% or greater chance of having a child with the disease.) On the second day of vacation, I got a call from my fertility doctor—it was a jaw dropper—I learned that I indeed was a carrier of a rare mutation of cystic fibrosis. 😢

In utter shock, I hung up and shared with Mike. This unexpected news shattered our hearts...our hopes...and dreams. It stunned us. We were not expecting this at all. No one in my family that I was aware of ever had CF.
After that phone call, we took a long stroll on the beach—holding hands, crying, and trying to place our hurt hearts into God’s hands.

The thought of never having a child with my husband was so painful to think about—after everything CF had put us through, this far...how could it rob us of this?? Why?! I felt anger brewing within me. I HATED CF.
Just then, Mike found a nickel-size sand dollar on the beach—he picked it up, and gave it to me. He said, “we will have a baby some day...” and I believed him...with all of my heart.
I treasured that sand dollar, and kept it safe for the years to come.

2 years after that trip, we were blessed with our first baby boy. 💙 And today, we have two beautiful boys, who light up our worlds.
The sand dollar necklace I have around my neck, was a gift from Mike two years ago when we decided to have another, a gift I will forever cherish.

And now, as we visit the beach that once soaked up our tears of sorrow, and held us in it's soft sand of comfort, we watch our two sand dollar babies running up and down it’s coastline❤️ God is Good. #littleblessings #dreamsdocometrue #mama
