  • 154/2019: Continued from yesterday and this job that I had left India for...that first night in Singapore was just nuts. I had arrived unannounced into this flat full of SQ girls from India who were enjoying their day off and heading for a movie. I shared this lady's room and slept on her sister's side of the bed. The next morning, I had to make my own arrangements. But, I had no cash or cards. I had just packed up my rental flat in Bandra and left my dog with Nani. But no one to borrow emergency funds from. Then my friend from Mumbai came to the rescue, booking a room in a hotel for a couple of nights on the phone on his credit card and I moved my stuff over. The only saving grace of that place was it was walking distance to the office so I wouldn't have to spend any more money. That Sunday I ordered a hot dog from Orange Julius with a drink, thinking how expensive things were in Singapore. And lay in bed wondering if I had made the right decision.
#AboutLastNight - a break in regular programming and scheduling to bring you this floaty filmy number from last evening. I went into town for dinner at a fancy restaurant. A while back, I spotted a photo here of a dupatta on sale and I asked for the same chikankari work on a saree instead. And here it is. An organza white with colourful chikankari in pink, peach, white, beige and green, with mukaish work done all over. Worn with an #unblouse I had been hanging around in on the beach earlier in the day since it was a two-saree day. Some pearls, silver shoes and a fuschia bag that popped. So many people stopped to pay compliments, I was definitely on top of the world last night. And see stories for more pics and the ref of 'filmy'! #sareesofinstagram #sareeoftheday #sareesofindia #sareesabroad #sareeslondon #summersorbet #sorbet #summersaree #summercolours #summerevening #weavesofindia #weavesofinstagram #heritagecraft #chikankari #handembroidery #embroideriesofindia

  • About those filters...
One way to tell whether an Indian is American enough is no matter how tanned you are in the hot sun, the first thing you do when you look at your pictures is move that skin tone handle to the right, or pick a filter like hefe on insta. Both will make you look more tanned. The reason I’m saying this with so much authority is, I’ve been guilty. And I thought, nothing better could break this habit than an all out confession. I have not found any skin more beautiful than Iman’s and seen bright lips look more mesmerizing than Janelle Monae although I find Emma Stone as beautiful. When I reflect on my image/ color perspective, I remember little snippets from my childhood and early adulthood of, ‘the girl will never get married/ or beta maybe you should use a washcloth on your face’ or ‘ at least the choti bahu is fair.’ I really do not think these statements were flung out with malice, they were just there, omnipresent, like the air that we breathe. As a child I heard it and never really get myself riled up enough to take offense. The more important snippet that I remember very clearly, was my mom telling me, ‘ you are not kali, your color is ‘gehua’(wheatish- of course that’s coded language in a lot of circles). She’d always recall her experience and childhood and say see they always said that I’d not get married and see where I am now (my dad is an IPS officer, quite a matrimonial prize (Jane Austenesque), and sweet and honest to boot) . She’d be the tigress if anyone dared to comment on her girls. I think I’ve been able to escape it relatively unscathed is because of the badass that my mom is. So ma, no matter how much I butt heads with you, I’m eternally grateful. And yes, I still remember, no using those hefe filters. 🤦🏽‍♀️ #iwearhandloom #weavesofindia #silksofindia #sarees #sareesofinstagram #kanjivaram #slowfashion #treasuredweaves

I wore sandals after such a long time! And the skies just opened - heavy rain and hail! Of course I waited for it to calm down before I walked back home. Though it was a light rain while I was walking, had to walk through puddles ... I so wanted to do “chhayi chhapa chhayi” but I didn’t 😜

A short break from Ikat to share this Maheshwari Saree. Why am I doing this? Because @govindachouhan19 messaged me saying: Didi, sales are less because of rain. If you know someone who needs Sarees, please share my number (9827810038) with them. It will be a great help.

I found out about Govind last year through @anvayastories and ordered a few Sarees. This one is from him. His Sarees seem good and prices are reasonable. He is very polite and respectful.
***
To clarify:
-I have nothing to gain from this: no commission, no discount, no free Saree
-I do not sell Sarees
-He messaged and I decided to share his information for Saree lovers to know and for him to benefit
-Please decide to buy only if you are convinced, I have got nothing to do with the transaction or conversation for the transaction
-I have had the Saree for a year and seems good, but have not worn it extensively or washed / dry cleaned etc. Some other ladies who bought from him .. might be able to share their experience as well 😊

  • Doing a copycat of @bit_desiriented, of course u don’t have to tell me that I failed miserably! But felt boss anyway! Love your style and panache Sonya!
Today had a D&I initiative meeting to grow a women’s career to success, what best to celebrate that...dress in your best finery! #ikat_ki_bahaar and @sareesaatsamundarpaar yaad aayi and first thing in IG saw Sonya’s inspiring well pleated cotton drape and decided to go for it!
Curated this look with my 1st owned sari a Pochampally (i’m guessing as no borders to prove it’s an Orissa ikat) maybe 20 years old but still drapes like a charm and so light but firm!
Ek funny incident hua aaj, women complimenting to hota hee hai but today an old uncle in my building couldn’t believe his eyes that aajkal ki ladkiyaan sari bhi pehenti hai (of course didn’t say anything, but his eyes did!) We both with another kid got into a lift and I pressed my floor button which he missed and kid pressed for his! Coincidentally uncle was also going to the same floor as the kid, but he turned towards me and told in all excitement “oh r u going to my floor??!!” Of course I had to deny and he immediately felt sorry to show his enthusiasm!
Glad that half the work week is over..somehow it is dragging to the finish line..:(
And finally a #black_ka_magic for @dr.kirtika
