Professor Elizabeth Blackburn
In 2009, Tasmanian-born Professor Blackburn became the first Australian woman to win a Nobel Prize in recognition for her achievements in Physiology/Medicine. She holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from the University of Melbourne, as well as a PhD from the University of Cambridge. In 1978, she joined the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley where she and Carol Greider co-discovered the enzyme telomerase. Elizabeth is currently the President of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

Rust Doesn't Give You Tetanus!
Ever step on a rusty nail? It was, in all likelihood, rapidly followed by your parents dragging you to the doctor’s office for a painful (but safe!) tetanus shot. The memory of my first tetanus shot is preceded by an exploring an abandoned barn and getting cut by a stray wire fence. If it had happened in my own home it wouldn’t have even deserved a band-aid, but the threat of rust sent us to the doctor's office.
But it turns out that injuries caused by rusty objects aren’t any worse than injuries caused by any other discarded object.
Tetanus, or lockjaw, is a bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani, an extremely hardy rod-shaped bacterium found in animal digestive tracts and soil worldwide. Tetanus is fatal in about 10% of cases but causes muscle spasms, fever and trouble swallowing in all cases.
The reason we associate tetanus with rust is because it’s often found in soil that’s rich in organic material like manure or dead leaves. Old houses, cars or other discarded items left in nature for long enough will rust (if they’re metal) and collect bacteria like Clostridium tetani, but the relationship between rust and tetanus-causing bacteria is purely correlative, not causative. Humans can be exposed to Clostridium tetani in a variety of non-rusty ways, such as when cleaning animal cages, when bitten by infected animals, or if exposed to contaminated heroin.
So if your skin is pierced from anything from your own kitchen knife to a rusty gnarled screw, or if you begin working on a farm, it's worth making sure that your tetanus shot is up to date. After all, (in Canada at least) it's free and lasts an entire decade.

Deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule composed of two chains that coil around each other to form a double helix. Your DNA is your hereditary material and contains all the information that essentially makes you...YOU 🤩(as well as encoding for all of the proteins and everything else you need to function!)⠀
Most DNA replication as well protein synthesis happens at night - in fact, 30x more cellular turnover happens at night vs during the day!! ⠀
The reason for this is because in order to replicate, or start the process of creating proteins, our DNA must unwind. ⠀
When our DNA is unwound it is the MOST vulnerable to assault whether that be from free radicals, or environmental factors like sunlight. ⠀
If we were to do more repair during the day our DNA would be at greater risk for actinic (sun) damage. 🤯⠀
Fun fact- why I preach so much about wearing sunscreen is because ultraviolet radiation from the sun is strong enough to cause your DNA to inappropriately bind to itself in a hair-pin loop, this is called a thymine:thymine dimer. 😱🙅🏼♀️⠀
To remove this mistake, your body must recognize the error and cut it out of the DNA and then re-insert the correct sequence. Whenever our body must correct for something it opens the door for more error. This is significant because skin cancer in itself is a abnormal functioning cell, typically we see this as a skin cell continuously proliferating and losing the “stop” function. ⠀
Moral of the story: DNA is cool, and you should wear sunscreen 🧬 😎 ☀️ 🧴 ⠀
