  • Ask.

.
I have a hard time asking. Because to ask is to make a desire an artifact in the world.... and my deep fear is that that faith artifact will be used as evidence against my trust if the ask isn’t fulfilled. And I don’t won’t the relational heartbreak. So I’d rather not ask.

“Your Father in Heaven knows everything you need before you even ask...”

May saying this out loud be my small step toward understanding the waiting Grace in an Ask.

It's a scary request... The world is obsessed with wealth and security and upward mobility and prestige. But let us teach solidarity, walking with who the world calls victims (but we know better), serving and loving. I offer this for you to consider - downward mobility. And I would say in this enterprise there is a great deal of hope and unlimited possibility. .

  • I remember going to Father Michael back in 2013 and telling him I was so fearful about money! I was working full time at a school in Brooklyn and while I made a good salary, my cost of living was so high. He asked if I had a budget and I was like no (??). He told me that God doesn’t have a magic wand and I could help myself by doing practical things like making a budget. THEN this week we were talking about my business and I was like “so much is changing, it’s scary” and he was like “do you have a budget? Business plan? What’s your discernment process” etc etc. and then he gave me something new to contemplate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He said that only after I can be disciplined in practical matters can I find any true spiritual discipline. So he challenged me to be deliberate in some practical matters that need my attention. Budgeting, making goals, eating well, planning etc etc. What other areas need YOUR attention and discipline?

  • Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers. Ps 1:1-3

  • Do you feel your church or theology puts the divine in a box? Are you one of the growing number of people who claim to be spiritually independent or “none” as in no religious affiliation? Do you still hang onto core values and wonder if your life has meaning? Have you ever wanted to talk about spiritual matters with someone who will listen? You may be searching for a spiritual companion. I am currently excepting new spiritual seekers. Please visit my website at listening-heart.com for more information. • You know what I’ve discovered about things we try to bury? In the right environment, where the soil is rich, they become like seeds. Dying. Germinating. Cracking open. Pushing Up. Boldly, with bravery, the shoot springs forth from the ground. And if the environment continues to work in harmony with the shoot, it grows and flourishes into something much larger than it ever was at its inception. 💐
It’s risky, I know. I’ve been there too. I’m probably still there. But what environment have you planted the seed of yourself in? Is there enough nourishment to sustain your flourishing? What’s compelling you to come forth? To step into yourself and own your BE-ing? What are the voices that need to quiet in order for you to hear Love’s call? 💐
Love beckons. Will you come forth?

  • It’s Tao Tuesday again. Thank you, Ralph Alan Dale, for your interpretation of verse 77.
🙏🏼
“The way of the great integrity is like stringing a bow, pulling down the high, lifting up the low.
Shortening the long, lengthening the short to take from the excessive and give insufficiency support.

How opposite to our social norms which increasingly impoverish the poor to further enrich the rich who do not need any more.
How can we gather the world’s wealth to create abundance for all in need? Through rediscovering the great integrity, by acting without praising the deed.”
🙏🏼
There is nothing wrong with stockpiling wood, putting up preserves or saving for a rainy day. But what if you never believe that you have enough wood, food or money? May we all become aware of these “fine lines” in our lives as we see and meet the needs of those around us. 🙏🏼 #taoteching #taoism #daoism #laotzu #greed #excess #poverty #woodpile #spiritualaf #wisdom #spiritualdirection #wood # balance #security #quantity #truth

  • Getting people to talk about things they love is the quickest way to put them at ease. Try this with the next new person you meet. .

Do you have another good go -to question when you meet someone new? How has someone else helped you feel comfortable in a new situation?

  • Greetings from the beautiful Bon Secours retreat center. I’m in the midst of my third and final intensive week of spiritual direction training. A spiritual director is one who ‘tends the holy’, who supports another as they seek to deepen their relationship with the Divine. Through close listening and well-placed questions, the director holds space for the other to approach God in their own way. I’m so excited to be learning about this gentle practice and am grateful for my teachers and fellow students. Rich blessings indeed. #bonsecoursretreatcenter #spiritualdirection #manyblessings #gratefulheart

  • Spiritually. Relationally. Emotionally.
If you haven’t sought hard, fought hard, cried hard, prayed hard, laughed hard, been present in the hard, it will impact how you are with people, what you say to them, how you parent, how you relate to your spouse. If you want people to go deep, then you need to be willing to go deeper.
Edit: this quote did not originate with me. I first heard it in graduate school when Dr. Dan Allender said it.

  • Glad you asked! There is no rule about how often you should meet with your spiritual director, but a fairly standard interval between spiritual direction sessions is three or four weeks. This allows time in between sessions to notice new ways God is guiding, how questions you've been asking are being answered or maybe changing shape, or how you're longing for guidance or presence or comfort from God. It also allows time for you to try any practices you and your spiritual director might have discussed. Although you might opt for a longer amount of time between sessions, if you feel the need to meet more frequently (like every week or every two weeks) you’d be wise to consider whether you’re dealing with something urgent that would be better handled in therapy. There’s also no rule about how long to stay in spiritual direction. Some people meet continually with a spiritual director for decades, and others participate for just a session or two, and on both ends of that spectrum spiritual direction can be beneficial. In general, however, the longer you stay in spiritual direction the deeper you’ll be able to go in your processing. And of course, receiving insights, guidance, healing, and clarity from God requires patience, whether you are participating in spiritual direction or not. . .

  • • Breath Prayer •
May ________ always pray and not lose heart.
🌿
It can be a challenge and exhausting doing good when it seems so much around you is pushing against that good. I pray this for our leaders that are constantly seeing all the work in front of them. People’s pain and struggles are constantly in front of them. They are responsible for decisions that will have an impact on the lives of many around them. The place of a leader carries blessing but also carry’s a weight and so I pray that they will always pray and not lose heart.
🌿
This is not a prayer just for leaders. Whose name would you fill in the blank with? Do you know someone struggling with forces around them pushing against the good they are trying to live out? Is there anyone toiling over a decision to be made? Are YOU in need of this encouragement to your spirit?
🌿
As we continue the work of surrendering we remember that our hearts are lifted by our Lord and Savior.
Jesus who bore our sin.
Jesus who died for our debt.
Jesus who rose for our freedom.
.
[As I breathe in, I pray]
May ______ always pray,
[As I breathe out, I pray]
And not lose heart.
.
“Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart...” Luke 18:1 NASB

  • We love this simple description of one of the things that happens when our false/ shadow self takes the wheel. .

When we’re in the middle of a reaction we often can’t see it- because it’s so automatic. ( stats show we’re on auto pilot 95% of the day!) But we can see the response our reactivity gets from the people we live & work with. .

What can you do to slow your reaction when you’re hit with stressful or unpleasant comments or events? .

Pay attention to the energy you expend. Do you power up or shut down? .

Try getting someone to help you notice your responses or keep a log of your reactions either mentally or physically. .

Just deciding to pay more attention can go a long way toward curbing reactivity.
Notice without judging- use the same compassion for yourself you would give to a friend. .

At first you’ll see it only after the fact- but the more you notice, the more you’ll catch yourself in the act and begin to hold off over-reacting altogether. .

The next step - and probably a more significant one -is learning to see beneath the reaction to what’s actually triggering it. .

But it’s enough to pay attention today to what and who incites a negative reaction. It’ll go a long way to easing your stress, and building goodwill in all your relationships. .

You’ve got significant work to do and relationships to enjoy. We’re here to help you thrive. .

  • Of Changed Landscapes and New Growth. I remember May 18, 1980. It was the day that Mt. St. Helens blew up. The landscape of my world changed. I remember the fear, the loss, the ash. As I am thinking today about this catastrophic event, I am now full of wonder. There are events in all of our lives which alter our landscape; a diagnosis, a death, a loss of relationship or community, a move. We can all relate. These are times where we need to offer grace to ourselves and we need grace from others. Grief shows up in unpredictable places and there is no easy way around it, going through it is necessary for our physical, mental and spiritual health. One thing I know for sure, grief will show up eventually, even if we try to bury it. Embracing it is important to healing. It can be a time of dis-orientation and a time when it is important to get the support we need. As a spiritual director, I am given the immense gift of sitting in these life altering places with others. Having a non-judgmental person to hold sacred space with you, can be the much needed support needed when it feels like life is raw or erupting. (As I have said previously, a certified Spiritual director knows their role in the spiritual and mental health spectrum and will make referrals when presented with something outside their training and skill set.) Within the boundaries of health, it is a beautiful thing when light begins breaking forth in our grief (this takes time) and we begin to ask questions like, “What now?” “What will my new reality look like?” “How will I adapt to my new landscape?” Life seems to move from beige to colour again. Just like Mount St. Helen life comes back, even to a fierce landscape. If this is your reality today, may you find the companionship or help you may need to accompany you on this difficult journey. #Susan.Anquist #Spiritualdirection #mentalhealth #grief #Portlandseminary #Jesusfollower #Spiritualformation. #Spiritualdirector #Caminodesantiago #hope #gracegiving #companioning #spiritualhealth

  • Often people will initially tell me how they see God as only loving and good. (Which I believe is true: God IS loving and good) but we only arrive at that once we process through theology. I still process these questions myself from time to time. Through conversations or the process of spiritual direction, something underneath comes to light. There’s a fear of what it looks like when we displease or disappoint God. We say that we trust and know God is loving and forgiving, yet we are scared to be totally vulnerable with God. Which tells me that we are fearful. That somewhere in is we are afraid that God is how Father Rohr describes. We can’t work through the messy theology and arrive at the space where we feel it in our bones that we are loved and liked and celebrated by God until we recognize that we have some theology that lends to incongruent thinking. The first step is acknowledging what’s deep inside our hearts and minds, and then we can begin processing with God. #spiritualdirection

  • If these shoes could talk they would tell you a story about a girl who found herself in Rome 4 years ago. She was an anxious mess always wondering if she was on the “right” path.
• So much has changed in those four years- career direction, relationships, dreams, location etc. So much of what I had planned and hoped for didn’t turn out the way I wanted. But as I look back at some of those plans and relationships I realize now that they needed to die in order for me to continue on the path that was right for me. • That had always seemed like a selfish thought until recently I realized I wasn’t trusting my own process of becoming and since everyone is in their own process of becoming I could trust that in the end everything would be ok for all of us. • Along my journey my friend Amy has always encouraged me to “follow the breadcrumbs” which means follow the signs in front of you to get to where you need to go.
• This star reminds me of those breadcrumbs. They are small and you have to pay attention but they are usually right in front of you leading the way. They don’t give you the full path but they show you the right next step.
• I’m finally learning what it feels like to just focus on the right next step instead of worry about the destination and it feels pretty good. • Here’s to all of us becoming who we are designed to be and finding the breadcrumbs in front of us. 🥂
