  • The number one question I get when people see Marek and I work in public is “how do you keep him so focused on you?” Engagement, engagement, engagement.
Engagement is something I absolutely preach when it comes to dog training. Engagement means to me, that the dog thinks you are the best thing in his world. He’s pushing you to work, not you pushing him. He thrives for it, he enjoys it. It can be one of the more difficult aspects of training, more so because if it’s not there the rest of your training can take a major hit. How do you work with a dog that isn’t interested in what you have to show him? That doesn’t think you’re fun? The short answer is you don’t. So how do you build engagement with your pup? Below I’ll go over some of the basic steps that can help improve you and your dog’s working relationship.

Right from the get go, it should be the first thing you work on. I didn’t touch obedience with Marek for the first week. I hand fed his meals (still do), simply by taking steps backwards and rewarding him for following me. Made it fun. Made him chase me. Rewarded for eye contact. Rewarded heavily for any sign of excitement. I let him jump all over me and partied like it was the best thing he’d ever do when he did. weird right? Rewarding a dog for jumping on you? Barking at you? These behaviors can be toned down later, but rewarding for excitement and rewarding for following me was the only goal at the beginning. He learned quick that when he was active and pushing me he got rewarded. After a few days of this we started doing some luring and position work, and even this helped his engagement. Making a dog work for his food is such a good way to build a handler bond (all good things come from you) and build work ethic and focus. We practiced this behavior out in public, luring him into me, rewarding for eye contact, rewarding for showing focus. He learned that no one else in public had anything fun for him, so he learned to ignore distractions. If he thinks I’m the best thing in his world why would he feel the need to go exploring elsewhere? If you’re the handler, no one else should be working with that dog, at least for the first couple weeks. (Continued)

  • If you’ve never enjoyed a honeybun fried in bacon grease from a duck blind prepared by master chef @raggiocustomcalls, you’re not livin’ right.
