This is our original 1955 Land Rover Series 1 86” Station Wagon. First registered in London this vehicle was originally owned by a stock broker who used to drive it to Scotland to go shooting in the winter months. The Royal Family where often seen using them, for events and on their estates. Interestingly both long and short Station Wagons attracted massive Purchase Tax in Britain in the 1950’s.
(With windows behind the driver's seat, they fell within the 'car' taxation class). Making this vehicle almost twice the price of a standard Series 1 Land Rover.
I attach a Price List from June 1957.
It's over-written - these are final prices for the very last Series Ones.
Anyway, if we look at the final prices:
SWB SW (petrol) = £1058.17.
LWB SW (petrol) = £1223.17.
Therefore, bigger vehicle’s with more capacity was just £165 more - far better value.
