  • A reminder today for artists and creatives: value over quantity. Instagram culture tells us CONTENT CONTENT CONTENT. But most people would prefer to see art you truly feel inspired to make, and if they don’t then they only value watered down tired works and not you as an artist. I hope for myself and for you all that we can push against the social media culture for the sake of our art and ourselves. It’s worth it. 🥖🧈Here’s an un-photoshopped underwater scene I created and photographed in August for @zoeskyjordan. Also, I will be posting a personal editorial I worked on a few months ago early next week. Be on the lookout!

  • A couple observational drawings I created of my good bean, Flynt! 🙀
. .
These two drawings were done using Sakura ink pens with chisel shaped nibs. I really enjoyed the amount of line variation that these pens had to offer. ✍️
. .
I had to think more in texture with these drawings. I'm used to utilizing more contour lines. I need to step outside my comfort zone more often! 🌞
. .
If you were interested, seven more of these drawings are available on Patreon!

What pulls you out of your comfort zone?

  • My student Wendy finished her big art project today, and I cannot be more proud of her commitment and tenacity in overcoming and learning new technical challenges these past few months. From drawing glass, to fixing charcoal that has already set, Wendy faced a new challenge every time we met for our weekly session. Art isn’t for the faint of heart, and even though many times she expressed fear at not being able to finish or overcome, she had allowed me to guide her and perk her up with my pep talk. I started out as a 2D painter, and still practice it often, so I always get a bit teary when I see another young soul completing their “rite of passage” artwork, one that tests their mettle, passion, and patience! #proudartteacher #charcoaldrawing #stilllife #classicalart #studentwork

  • The breakfast still-life type originated in the Netherlands about 1620. It usually displays simple foods, such as bread, cheese, and glasses of wine or beer. 🍊🍋🍇🧀🍞🍷🍺Here, the partly peeled lemon and cut round of bread impart a domestic feeling. Yet the wine and bread may allude to the Eucharist, while the candies—one unwrapped and already losing its coating of sugar beads—may contain a moralizing message.

Now on view:
Still Life, mid 17th century
Juriaen van Streeck, Dutch, 1632–1687
Oil on canvas
39.5 x 31.5 cm (15 9/16 x 12 3/8 in.) frame: 55.9 x 48.6 x 7.6 cm (22 x 19 1/8 x 3 in.)
Museum purchase
