  • Happy Sunday afternoon 💛 I’ve been so busy rearranging my bookshelves. I’m in the mood for some light feel good reads and I’m really liking how my shelves have turned out so far. Do you see any of your favorite books and what books do you think I’m missing that I must add to my collection? 📚✨

  • Happy Saturday! 💫 Look at these gorgeous spines wow! So much has happened these last few days: my girl @taylorswift dropped her newest song and I have to admit I didn’t really care for it at first but now it’s stuck in my head all the time and I really enjoy it. Also, Avengers: End Game came out and ripped out my fucking heart and I’m so sad it’s over and yeah. 🤙🏻 I’m fine everything’s fine. 🙃 Have you read any of these books? Which one is your favorite? I’ve only read The Astonishing Color of After in this stack! #books #booksofinstagram #tbrpost #currentlyreading #booksofig #bookstagram #circe #stilllives #botm #read

  • I figure with May half done it’s probably time for me to talk about my @bookofthemonth book pick this month. This month I picked “Still Lives” by Maria Hummel even though it sounded a little on the morbid side. The truth is, from the synopsis it sounded like it might be super thought provoking, so I decided to take a chance and step out of my comfort zone to try it out. .
✨
This month’s books were: “The Mars Room” by Rachel Kushner, “Still Lives” by Maria Hummel, “The Perfect Mother” by Amiee Molloy, “Small Country” by Gael Faye, and “How to Walk Away” by Katherine Center. If you’re not familiar with Book of the Month, each month you have until the 7th to select one of the five book selections (or skip that month for whatever reason) You can add another book for $9.99 if more than one catch your eye, and all US shipping is free. .
✨
What were your picks this month? Has anyone already read “Still Lives”? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. .
✨

  • ⬇ 🇷🇺 It's been a month.
⠀
I actually didn't plan to disappear from IG, but life just got too exciting 💗🎈👻.
⠀
We finally left Siberia, visited my parents in the North Caucasus and ended up living👉🚪 next door to my sister's, exactly as we dreamt as children.
⠀
📖As for reading, I've managed to do a lot while on the train 🚂. Reviews and ratings are coming soon!
⠀
What is the longest brake you took from IG?
⠀
P. S. Many thanks to my mother for the beautiful peonies😍!
⠀
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖
⠀

  • NATURE BOY opens tonight 6-9. And OF COURSE there’s an over-the-top-totally-theatrical tongue-in-cheek-gimmick...but you have to catch it in person. 😂 oh what could it be?!?!? 🤷🏼‍♂️😅🎶

  • Get ready for a book you won’t be able to put down: @reesewitherspoon’s August pick for @hellosunshine is #StillLives by @mariahummel5656! It’s a thrilling mystery that will leave you wondering which characters you can and can’t trust. The story follows a controversial female artist in LA who suddenly goes missing, and everybody around her looks guilty. There’s a twist at the end that still keeps us up at night, it's THAT good. And the suspense in the @audible_com version is so real—you can really hear the fear and tension... just thinking about it gives us chills. Tap the link in bio to get started with #HelloSunshineOnAudible. We can’t wait to hear what you think!

Still Lives by @mariahummel5656 was one of the five @bookofthemonth picks for this month! I absolute love the cover of this one, and it sounds great! Which book(s) did you choose this month? 🤓🖤📖
________________________________________________________
📖Synopsis:
A young editor at a Los Angeles art museum finds herself pulled into the disturbing and dangerous world of a famous artist who goes missing on the opening night of her exhibition
Kim Lord is an avant garde figure, feminist icon, and agent provocateur in the L.A. art scene. Her groundbreaking new exhibition Still Lives is comprised of self-portraits depicting herself as famous, murdered women—the Black Dahlia, Chandra Levy, Nicole Brown Simpson, among many others—and the works are as compelling as they are disturbing, implicating a culture that is too accustomed to violence against women.
.
As the city’s richest art patrons pour into the Rocque Museum’s opening night, all of the staff, including editor Maggie Richter, hope the event will be enough to save the historic institution’s flailing finances.
.
Except Kim Lord never shows up to her own gala.
.
Fear mounts as the hours and days drag on and Lord remains missing. Suspicion falls upon the up-and-coming gallerist Greg Shaw Ferguson, who happens to be Maggie’s ex. A rogue’s gallery of eccentric art world figures could also have motive for the act, and as Maggie gets drawn into her own investigation of Lord’s disappearance, she’ll come to suspect all of those closest to her.
.
Set against a culture that too often fetishizes violence against women, Still Lives is a page-turning exodus into the art world’s hall of mirrors, and one woman’s journey into the belly of an industry flooded with money and secrets.

•
“Why here? Why subject us to these scenes in an art museum, when we’ve seen them practically everywhere else? For decades the spectacle of female homicide has spattered the news. We’ve seen victims in every feminine shape, young to old. The child pageant winner with her sexy lipstick, duct-taped and garrote. The teenager abducted from her suburban bedroom. The elderly woman raped and strangled by a stranger she allowed in the door. I hate this artwork. I hate the abject powerlessness it projects. I hate it because it reminds me there is an end for women worse that death. I will not look at it again.”
•
“We’ll talk about her case as ‘solved’ or ‘unsolved,’ as if knowing who killed her and dumped her body explains anything about why her life had to end. Eventually the reason she died will frame her whole existence - and not the infinite reasons she deserved to live.”
•
While her narrator investigates the disappearance of a famed female artist, Hummel examines the particular way in which brutally murdered women seem to become cultural icons at the expense of their humanity. Photos the Black Dahlia, for example, are perhaps as recognizable as the Mona Lisa, but we forget that before she was a famous corpse the Dahlia was aspiring actress Elizabeth Short, who perhaps wouldn’t have wanted to be known only as a brutally murdered girl found in pieces in a public park, but she’s not around to ask, is she?
•
Hummel also discusses the idea of ownership throughout her novel: ownership of works of art and ownership of story. Who really owns a piece of art? The artist who made it? Or the museum curators, gallerists, and collectors who work together in a complicated web to decide what is preserved and what is cast aside? Similarly, who owns a story? You, the person who lives it? Or, if you are so chosen, the society who elevates you to icon status? And what happens when society develops a taste for icons, specifically beautiful dead ones who cannot protest the consumption of their lives?

  • 🤷🏻‍♀️Let’s talk about disappointing reads🤷🏻‍♀️
.
Still Lives by Maria Hummel has been on my TBR for awhile now. The premise/blurb sounds amazing. Kim Lord, a world renowned artist, goes missing on the night of her exhibit opening & suspicion falls onto Maggie’s ex who also happens to be Lord’s current boyfriend. Maggie then takes it upon herself to find out what happened. I was expecting drama and twists and turns and what I was left with was a ton of shallow characters. I couldn’t connect with any of them so much so that I had to force myself to finish this and I almost didn’t care who the murderer was. Ultimately this book was just as shallow as the paintings Kim Lord presented. A great idea, but no thought put behind expanding upon the premise.
.
Alison’s rating: 🌟🌟
.
QOTD: What was your last disappointing read & why (so maybe I won’t pick it up 😂)????
