  • IF YOUR MEMORIES COULD SPEAK TO ME - Gauri Mhaslekar
.
If your memories could speak to me,
I hope,
They tell me a tale
Of proposals over cheeseburgers
Over shared peri-peri fries
Hands brushing but never quite touching.
About friends, who made it all possible
Phone calls and corridor walks
Ridiculously cheesy messages and handwritten notes
March-past practices
Stars
And us,
Always us.
Will they tell me though?
About the broken hearts too,
The disappearing texts and the vanishing smiles?
I hope not,
If my memories could speak to you
They too would tell you a tale
Of a boy,
Sweet as summer
With deep golden-brown eyes
That were never meant for the winter that came.
And it did, come
The winter, I mean.
I always liked the cold,
But you didn't
And so, it was.
Our shared memories came to an end;
For my snow was melted by your heat,
And everything else that came with it.

  • OF BOYS AND BROKEN HEARTS - Prithika Manivel (@anoxymoronlife)
.
i hope you don't give in
when they tell you
that the next boy will be better
than this
the fights aren't worth it,
the neighbors will quip
but what do they know
about the way he makes you feel
when the first word
on his lips every morning
is your name
what do they know,
the people that send
good morning texts by the dozen
and wait for one to catch
about this boy who's got eyes
that seek out your smile
in a room full of people
or in a memory that's just yours
he looks like a heart breaker, they'll chide
and listen
love isn't supposed to be hard
and boys aren't supposed to break hearts
but it happens anyway
so if he offers
to pick yours up
and gild its cracks with love
could it hurt any more
than it already does?
and even if they are right,
the people who
don't care to receive love
in the way that he gives it
your over mended heart could use some
real healing
and every time he gets clumsy
just remember
your mother raised you
to clean up after yourself
even if that means
you'll be left picking up pieces
of what was once whole.

  • GOLD - Megha Rao (@_megharao)

My grandmother
tells me she was thirteen
when my thirty-year-old
grandfather came looking
for brides in her tiny village,
thirteen when
she traded textbooks
for horoscopes, school
bags for suitcases
family for strangers
and voices for silences.
She read her Tamil novels
when her mother-in-law
was asleep
and had my mother
when she was sixteen.
Every time I visit her,
she spreads a banana leaf
in front of me and tells me
not to touch the rice
and the curry
with the same hands.
Brahmin customs.
Almost as if learning this
was more important than
learning about
fundamental human rights,
about how they
robbed her of a life.
I imagine countless children
lying on wooden beds,
or worse, mats
their hair done up with
day-old jasmine garlands
in silk sarees their
fragile bodies can barely
carry and tell myself I am lucky
I wasn’t from that era.
That I am a woman
who knows her privilege,
that the Supreme Court
has thankfully,
already ruled that sex
with an underage wife is rape.
But then I remember
that solo trip to rural India
not too many years back,
when I watched from far
dancing men and drums
drowning the anklet sounds
of a girl barely
old enough to date,
and trudging behind her,
her young mother, weeping
quietly into her
turmeric smeared hands
and for a minute
when she looked up
and looked into my eyes
we were just two stricken women
wondering if the only difference
between a procession
heading to a crematorium
and one walking towards
a man's house
was how much gold
a corpse
could wear.

  • The warmth of my coffee mug had long since escaped into the atmosphere, but my hands remain cupped around it.
I desperately stare at the drops of moisture inching their way to the bottom of the windowpane in the hope of staying distracted, but my eyes helplessly shift to my phone screen.
'No notifications,' I sigh. It seemed like the longer you were away, the lesser you think about me.
They tell me that I should give you time, give you some space to miss me, but how do I even begin to explain to them that time doesn't make your heartache for me, it only makes my absence a habit and space your home.
It's not the distance between us, my love, it's not a thousand miles that are pulling us apart, it's the awkward silences that used to be comfortable, the "We just spoke," instead of an "I miss you already" and your hurried good morning texts that replaced our drowsy late-night calls, but your promise to always love me is still as strong as the winds that blow in your new city,
because,
you haven't fallen out of love, baby,
you just left it behind.

✨🌳📚 "Evolve Anyways" 🔮✨🙏 | Practice. A few months ago I reached out to someone I admire for guidance * cough @the.holistic.psychologist * . I wanted to hide and felt stuck (still do sometimes). But she gave me a great gift. Permission to practice. Gradually. Daily. Making choices from the Higher Self. With the awareness that the Ego will resist. Attempting to scare us back into the comfort zone. But to evolve anyways. Bc the ego will chatter and lie to us. Normal. And I really like to think of it as "practice" and/or "alignment". It feels more flowy and takes pressure off (but doesn't make it easier lol).
.
.
I released a podcast yesterday w. @inspiredtowrite and my ego REALLY wasn't having it. Messy magic. I wanted to literally crawl in a hole and cried to my boyfriend & friends about it. I even had a nervous dream lastnight that I crashed a giant spaceship and lost hundreds of lives. Half of Earth hated me. 🙃 I realized this subconsciously translated to me fearing losing people's acceptance. But hey, at least I got practice in that traumatic ass dream 🙌🤗. I feel I can do even more "scary" or "new" things now. And know that they will include pushing past resistance.
.
.
Anyways, point being is PRACTICE. New ways of being, thinking, feeling, and doing. This includes so much. Being patient with myself is something quite foreign to me. It is not my nature. But I've been seeking to radically employ self-compassion and patience with myself this year (and in future of course). Because things take time and that's just part of the human process. The journey. That we are all on. It's not from A to B. It's swirls and winds and dots and set backs and jumps. I just wanna embrace that shit. And be able to see it from a larger perspective. And to do my best to: evolve anyways.

  • Luriana, Lurilee

I wonder if it seems to you,
Luriana, Lurilee,
That all the lives we ever lived
And all the lives to be,
are full of trees and changing leaves,
Luriana, Lurilee. ©️Charles Elton

We all have one life to live, but within the span of our years we each live so many different lives, and as we grow, we evolve into so many different versions of ourselves. We grow, we change, we bring colour to our own life and to the lives of others, before we too are just a memory and a shadow on an empty bench.

If you could sìt quietly for an hour upon a wooden bench amongst the falling leaves on a golden Autumn afternoon, who would you share that hour with?

I would love to sit for an hour with along departed relative, Jessie Margaret, who used to sit me on her knee when I was a child, and colour my life with the most wonderful stories of faeries and dragons, of elves and selkies, of witches and warlocks, and who instilled in me a love of reading, and poetry, and storytelling. I would love to hear one more tale told in her soft Hebridean sing-song lilt.

  • 💕 LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL COMMUNITY WE’VE CULTIVATED TOGETHER! 💕 Our hearts are feeling very full after a very special weekend celebrating our first birthday with family, friends, and many, many new faces. ⠀
⠀
We’ve accomplished so much in just our first year - from all of our sales to securing distribution in bookstores, from creating cultural programming to circulation in libraries. It’s been such a wild and wonderful ride! And all of it was made possible thanks to the people in this photo and the many more who have supported us across the country and beyond.⠀
⠀
Our “official” team may be small, but the power of our community is vast and mighty. You’ve advocated on our behalf to get our magazine into bookstores, libraries, and so many other spaces. You’ve connected us to speaking opportunities and media to further our reach. You’ve gifted our publication to family and friends, amplifying the diverse voices represented in our pages. You’ve shared resources on how we can be better allies, better storytellers, better humans. ⠀
⠀
Even now, you continue to humble us with your generosity. Since we announced our call for submissions on Sunday, it’s already been shared hundreds of times and we are just so grateful. Thank you for helping us spread the word and continuing this important work in uplifting each other’s voices! ⠀
⠀
Our first year of existence has been one of overflowing - overflowing with stories, with connections, with community. And we are endlessly grateful to all of you for that. 💕

  • Happy Tuesday! Today’s #terraintuesday is going to be about the werewolf lair. This is going to take a different approach since we are dealing with a creature that is humanoid as well. The werewolf is going to either inhabit 1) a humanoid settlement, or 2) temperate forests; technically, the humanoid village could reside near a temperate forest. Either way, their lair is going to be pretty explanatory. —
Nevertheless, that does not mean that you can’t make it exciting. If it was me, I would design the encounter to begin in a village and then transition to a forest area. For example, the map shows a small, simple village that unbeknownst to the town, hosts a werewolf that periodically traverses to the woods to be with their wolf-pack. I made the map to specifically have the party choose where they want to interact with the werewolf; either in the town or in the forest. —
I like having multiple options since I won’t know what my party will decide until we play that session. They can confront them in the woods or the town in either a friendly or aggressive manner. Either way, I’m prepared to role-play both and to have combat in both areas (even though it’s more prep for me). In the case of building physical terrain, that requires you to construct a village scene and a wooded scene (both you can build on your own — plenty of great terrain builders on IG that I’d recommend). What do y’all think? Let me know in the comments below. —
For the curious, I used Inkarnate to create this map. I personally like using a mix of their pre-built and custom designs to create my maps. Keep Gaming!

  • ‼️TRAVEL TUESDAY #1: MILAN‼️ 🇬🇧Hi Everybody, today we are starting our first segment, called #traveltuesday. We are so lucky to have friends from all over the world, and we asked them to share with us information on their counties, the must-see and the practical tips to have an amazing travel experience. As we are hosting this beautiful collaborations, we thought it would be nice to start by presenting our country, and Milan in particular.
.....
Stay tuned for next week’s #traveltuesday, we are taking you to paradise
•
The first step of our segment is Milan. If you love New York-style autumn settings Milan will surprise you. However, if you love walking around to enjoy the first blooms of spring and a city full of events, Milan won’t certainly disappoint you. Beware of mosquitos though, they will always walk with you.
Things you must see:
The duomo: a beautiful gothic cathedral at the center of the city, topped by the famous Madonnina, a golden statue of Virgin Mary, the most authentic simble of Milan. If you love spectacular sunsets, walk up to the Duomo’s terrace (ticket costs 10 €).
Porta Venezia: this is the Rainbow district, grab an aperitivo for around 12-15 € along the famous Via Lecco/Via Tadino.
Hoepli Planetarium: located in the “Indro Montanelli” park, it shows a sky full of stars that is very difficult to see in such a chaotic metropolis (1.5€).
Church of San Satiro in Via Torino: the church, among the many beautiful ones in Milan, will amaze you with its false apse created by the great Renaissance artist Bramante. You can enter it for free too!
How to move:
Public transport is great: 2€ for a single ticket and 7€ to travel for 24 hours with buses, trams and metro.
Taxi: be patient, and bring cash with you, they almost never accept credit cards.
We recommend walking: from the Navigli to Porta Romana, to the elegant district of Brera to the new skyscrapers area of “City life”.
Milan is a city to love. Have you ever been here?

  • “How's baby doing?” We ask this question over and over.

How's baby doing during pregnancy. How's baby doing after birth, how's baby doing at 4,5,6 months old?

How's baby sleeping. How's baby eating?
Is this a happy baby? Is baby ok?

This question isn't bad in itself, it's actually a great question, but we forget who's behind the baby... Mom.

A mom who just carried a human being for 9 months, and then went through a huge process of birth, and the first question she's asked is how's baby doing?

A mom who's entire life has just changed, she's sleeping less than ever yet has more responsibilities than ever before.

Mom who went through the largest medical procedure the new mom has ever gone through, yet we forget. We forget to ask her how she's doing.

Mom who may wonder if she's crazy for having such a hard time.

Mom is there too.

And if we really want to take care of baby, we need to be caring of baby's parents.

I wonder how postpartum would change if we remember to ask about mom (and her partner). How is mom during her pregnancy? How is mom after birth? How is mom doing 4,5,6+ months postpartum? What if we asked how mom is sleeping? How is mom eating? Is mom happy? Is mom doing ok?

The next time you ask how is baby doing, remember behind every baby is the mom who is taking care of the baby.

Her feelings matter and by asking her these questions, you are giving her the space to feel supported.

When we can support each other and ask about the hard stuff, we can change the way postpartum feels for moms (and don't forget to ask the other parent how they are feeling as well!). Written content: @ourmamavillage .
