It wasn’t there, then it was
Like a seat on a carousel
Like one of those fairground rides
Like one of those pleasure boats on a boating lake
Like one of those bedside lights
in the shape of a swan
And it shone.

This week Swan Upping is taking place. The annual census of the swan population on a particular stretch of the River Thames has changed from a mostly ceremonial event to an important element of wildlife conservation.
The Swan Marker’s iconic five-day journey upriver has been an annual ceremony for hundreds of years.
This drawing, by William McMillan, was presented to The Queen by the Royal Academy of Arts in 1953 as part of a coronation gift.
Royal Swan Upping is taking place this week travelling from Sunbury along the River Thames to Abingdon Bridge. Photographer @ianlongthorne travelled with David Barber the Royal Swan Marker from Windsor to Cookham as the Swan Uppers were collecting data, assessing the health of young cygnets and examining them for any injuries. #swan#swans#cygnet#river#thames#royal #tradition#boats
