  • This is function > fashion but this @target sweatshirt dress may be the best thing to ever happen to me! 💃🏼 It’s so dang comfy and $24.99! (also comes in pink and creme) It was the perfect thing to throw on this gloomy morning and run out the door 🚪!

  • Do u think if I •tell• them they are enough, •show• them they are enough, & •teach• them to treat each other like they ALL are enough... that they will grow up without a doubt knowing that THEY ARE ENOUGH? I do. I really do.🌈

  • I got tired of playing the pencil game the last 3 years of my teaching career so this year I tried something new. These tooth brush holders have been my biggest lifesaver. Each container contains 5 sharpened pencils to last them an entire week. I don’t let my students use my electric sharpener because they seem to break them all the time. This saves my sanity from the annoying noise a pencil sharpener makes and knowing that all their pencils are in one spot. I sharpen everyone’s pencils at the end of each week and just replace any pencils that have lived a full life. ✏️ #lifesaver #teachertip . .

What is one thing that you consider a lifesaver in your classroom?

  • Last night I told my husband I was going to tattoo this onto my face.😧
.
"Just like cheek to cheek or what?" He responded sarcastically.
.
"No, probably like under my bangs or something." 🤨
.
.
BUT FOR REAL, yesterday I was trying to tape up some plastic sheeting to cover the cabinets while I painted yet ANOTHER ceiling and it kept falling down and I freaked out and threw the tape across the kitchen....🙄....
.
Almost immediately even I was like, "What the hell was that little tantrum I just threw?"
.
I was exhausted from painting ceilings, practically upside down most of the time, climbing up and down scaffolding 80 times to get the next foot of ceiling... but, still, WHAT A LAME EXCUSE.
.
Thank goodness I was listening to @cathy.heller's podcast all day because I WENT TO BED A BETTER PERSON. Omg, the power of the words!!!!!
.
Today, this phrase has already played over in my head 30 times. And I mentioned it to my husband last night, (about how I am making an effort to change my attitude and actions, life is too short, etc) which he clearly supports because this morning he woke me up and said he'd let the chickens out, fed the dogs and taken the trash out...good morning!🤗
.
Then, I said, "Great, I'll make you a nice breakfast."
.
It's a snowball effect either way, people...but YOU can decide--- what kind of winter storm is your attitude predicting? ☹️😀😞😍

  • I am SUPER EXCITED to share this event with y’all for a couple of reasons!
...
First, I’ll be in Johannesburg this February and wanted to add a Cape Town event SO MUCH. It took an opportune connection in Dubai this past August with @ladywesner to plant the seeds and have them begin to take shape into THIS AMAZING OPPORTUNITY. If you’re in the region please consider joining us. All the details can be found above or you can send me a DM. It’s going to be fantastic.
...
And second, my dear mum was raised in Cape Town, SA. Now that she’s no longer with us I’ve dearly wanted to return and retrace some of our familial steps. Not only is this trip providing some time to do so, but get this...the host school, Herschel Girls Preparatory School, is the school my mum attended until she moved to Canada. Goodness. If she could she this now, well, I just don’t know what she’d say but I do know this, she’d be proud.
...
“Looking forward to it” doesn’t seem to cut it with this event. It’ll be near and dear to my heart on several levels. Hope you’ll join us!

  • In many cases the parent or guardian you are calling has had nothing but negative interactions with their student’s school. Start with describing something positive about the student (even if you have to stretch the truth a little) and then transition to the phrase ‘I need your help with something...’ to maximize the productivity of the call.

Even better (if you can be patient) call home about something positive, end the call, and then call back a few days later to address the problem behavior. You may even find the student’s overall behavior improves in those intervening days, and you can mention that in the second call.

Phone calls home (and visits, but I know that can be scary) can be transformative but you need a comprehensive plan which includes an eye toward receptivity and follow-ups, otherwise the parent/guardian shuts down, gives up, and nothing had changed.

  • Comprehension is the 5th area of reading and it’s also an area where children struggle the most.
Taking 20-30 minutes a day to read WITH your child and ask questions will assist them in this area.
Guess what? I’ve created Comprehension Cards for you that go beyond “right there” questions.
You can keep these cards handy during reading time and they are appropriate for any text.
You can order via my website, educationallyspeaking.net (link in bio)
This resource is great for children in grades 3rd-6th. It’s also a great resource to use during center time. 💚🍏

  • Hi 👋 I’m Julie. It’s my first day of school since I took maternity leave at the beginning of the year.
.
It’s also my first day back in third grade after four years. (It’s amazing how much can change in just a couple of years)
.
.
I haven’t cried yet, but you better believe I’m missing my little guy and I’ll be checking my phone at plan, lunch and recess to see pictures of him from grandma. .
.
#wishmeluck At least it’s Friday. And Pajama day!

I have way too many to mention here, but if I had to choose just one... Stick Man by Julia Donaldson 😍
Predictable text and sequencing makes it first grade friendly and the message of returning to our family tree hits home ❤️🎄☃️

  • This week I got to meet the South Carolina Teacher of the Year @southcarolinatoty Chanda Jefferson is about as sweet and encouraging as people come! The tight schedule her group had only allowed for a five minute visit but in that time the group asked great questions about my classroom and the activity we were doing. I was impressed. And the encouragement I got from Ms. Jefferson was right on time. Thank you for your visit and may your reign continue to inspire fellow educators. #teacheroftheyear #educationinspiration

  • 🔥Behavior is never wrong🔥
.
.
Let’s say it again, loud and proud!
.
BEHAVIOR IS NEVER WRONG🗣
.
.
Here’s what I know:
1. Behavior is communication.
2. Behavior always has meaning.
3. Behavior is fulfilling a need.
4. Behavior is a solution to a problem.
.
.
We need to stop using words such as good or bad, right or wrong, when it comes to behavior.
.
Our behaviors do not define who we are as educators. And behaviors certainly do not define who our students are either. Yet, I am amazed at how quickly students are labeled by the behaviors they display...”the biter, the kicker, the kids who _____”.
.
Our students are learning how to experience the world around them, and I believe and trust that everyone does the best that they can with the current skills that they have. So if a child is behaving in a way that is unexpected for the situation, thats where we come in! We teach! And we keep on teaching! EVERY👏🏻SINGLE👏🏻DAY👏🏻
.
Behavior is never wrong!
.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! Do you hear people talking about behavior as right or wrong? What do you say in response to this? How can we help all educators understand that behavior is more than a right or wrong response?
