  • The time has come once again for eating disorders awareness.
An illness that has plagued, now over half my life. Almost took my life on several occasions. I was so lost, a complete shell of myself. The real me as a person was no longer there. I had become Anorexia Nervosa. At the age of 13 I got sent to an adolescent mental health unit. Which didn’t know how to treat me, so my illness actually became worse. They told my parents to take me to the general hospital as I needed a nasal gastric tube, they took me there, only to be told ahh she can go another week. I couldn’t.
So I was then sent to another adolescent mental health unit for eating disorders. At this stage my illness had taken over so much, I was hiding food, exercising, being sick, and when they had someone watching me, I would find ways to be sick without them knowing. I was sectioned under the mental health act, wasn’t allowed to leave, wasn’t allowed to go outside, had to have someone follow me 24/7 yes even in the toilet. I was in and out over the course of a few years, until I reached the adult age, where I then had to go to a locked adult mental health unit which within itself is another kind of hell.
My illness has been a long on-going battle that has taken so much of my life. In ways I’m a little institutionalised, I’m awkward, I’m nervous, I’m quiet, I don’t really know how to socialise, the thought of it terrifies me. Although I have come a long way from the times I have spoken about, those times will always affect me. I’ve come far within my recovery in many ways. But I’m by no means “cured” I’m just able to manage my illness better. If you are struggling please always hold on to hope! Hope is such a powerful thing. Things can get better. Stay strong and remember you are not alone. DON’T be afraid to reach out to someone. Talk about what’s going on for you right now.
But please don’t fall victim to the pro-ana pages. They are damaging, I don’t believe they are really run by people with eating disorders. Because people who truly have this illness don’t wish it upon their worst enemies. It isn’t a lifestyle choice, it certainly isn’t cool and it shouldn’t be glorified. EATING DISORDERS KILL.

  • WHAT DOES DEPRESSION LOOK LIKE?
-
It looks like Keith Flint, running a 5k fun-run in a personal best time just days before taking his own life. It looks like men who’ve spent years making us laugh: Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Matthew Perry, and Owen Wilson. It looks like hugely creative women: Lady Gaga, J K Rowling, and Kate Spade. It looks like me: uploading smiling photos on an almost daily basis.
-
Depression can be all consuming, but that doesn’t mean that it can always be seen. I just wanted to take a moment today to remind you all to check in on your friends and loved ones - when they tell you they’re “fine” ask them again if they’re sure or if they want to talk - and always, always be kind. Despite what you may see, you never know what someone is going through. 💭💗 #timetotalk #mentalhealthawareness

We all experience times when things are tough and living with chronic and/or mental illness the chances are it feels like there are more tough times than any other. Today is all about reaching out and connecting with each other to talk about how we’re feeling. We are so heavily connected in these times than any other and yet often we can feel so alone. We know this and that’s why we are here creating what we are and doing our best to grow and provide space for people to connect, share and feel less alone because the reality is you’re not alone in how you feel. Once we open up and get chatting it starts to reveal that so many of us can feel in the same boat it’s just we didn’t know. I appreciate face to face chats and socialising can be hard when you have chronic illness due to energy, I know I struggle but don’t forget thanks to the Internet we can reach out and have a conversations too. Whilst I love social media for connecting sometime my DM inbox can be overwhelming because I get all sorts of different messages it can be hard to see what’s what so wanted to give you a gentle reminder today we have our forum open anytime of the day or night to have a chat about anything. It’s there for you and maybe today reach out if you want to (link in bio) ⁣
I’ll be logging in later and having a catch up so come and introduce yourself and have a chat.⁣
⁣
Above all today we want to remind you that when you follow us you’re not just following a page on social media, you automatically become part of our village and we care about you and our community. We’re so grateful to have you here and never be afraid to talk about your feelings in the Village 💖

  • It's TIME TO TALK!
•
1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem each year, yet it's often not something that is talked about, or talked about enough. That needs to change. 👇🏾
•
One of my key ingredients when it comes to mental health, is friendship. That's why I have devoted a whole chapter on nourishing our friendships in my new book, The Stress Solution - link to order in bio 👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾Many of us are so busy, that without realising it, we are de-prioritising our friendships. I, myself, was guilty of this a few years back - but not any more!
•
We are not designed to be alone. We’ve evolved to live our lives as members of a large, supportive group. And supporting each other is exactly what we should and need be doing. Loneliness is on the rise all over the world. Many of us feel isolated and feel as though we can't discuss our mental health. But socialising, talking and sharing is really good for us. 🙌🏾
•
Nourishing relationships are key for our mental health and it's really important that we regularly diarise time to meet up with our friends, in person. The frequency will depend on many things including workload, family and distance. But meeting up with your friends is not a luxury, it is an absolute necessity for good mental health.
•
Too often, mental health problems lead to shame and isolation, and social isolation can be toxic. But just having a conversation with a friend - whether it's a chat over a cup of tea, a game of cards, or getting a group together to do a social activity - can make a massive difference.
•
So today, for #TimeToTalk Day, I challenge you to reach out to your friends, whether you need to talk or you think that they might, put yours phone away and focus on each other and have a conversation about mental health - start something today that lasts for more than just one day. Let me know your thoughts below 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾

  • Right now, generations of people in the same whanau are all getting their periods, so why aren't they talking to each other about it?

Menstruation is accompanied by a cultural taboo in almost every society in the world. It can be manifested by perception of uncleanliness, and the resulting stigma means that discussion about periods often happens in euphemisms, if discussed at all.

It's time to #breakthestigma and it's #timetotalk - to friends, to family, to strangers on the internet.

Periods. Are. Normal. We're committing to talking to someone new each cycle about our period, can you do the same? We want to share your stories with Aotearoa, so that we all benefit from the mahi.

  • Here's our Reusable Metal 400ml water bottle, although we can't solve the single use plastic issues across the world we can make a dent. I've traveled to and scuba dived in some of the most beautiful places in the world and have seen first hand the devistating effects single use plastics are having on the world. Some of the worst things are plastic bottles, straws and bags. We will be introducing our tote bags later this summer but for now we have the awesome Water Bottles... Who will you buy yours for? Oh and you can choose B Brave, B Kind, B Ready, B Driven or B Focused the choice is yours.which one is your fav? Guess what... We have tshirts vests and hoodies to match the bottles! .

  • Anyone else get days when everything just feels like this sky, all a bit ‘grey’? For me, it’s not necessarily depression, things just feel a bit flat. I’ve had one of those days today. Feeling uninspired, unproductive and unfit (cheers Easter). From past experience I know this low level mood won’t last forever as long I ensure I put some plans in place to give myself a break. So this Friday I’m going to head into London, stick my headphones on, pound the streets, take in some galleries and meet a mate for dinner. That might sound selfish to some, but I think I need to give myself a break to keep on top of my mental health. If you’re ever feeling the same as I am, if you can, give yourself a break too. We can’t look after others if we don’t look after ourselves first 👊

  • When you feel pulled from pillar to post & feel at breaking point....STOP. It’s ok, to stop. Let everything slow down. The pressure we put on ourselves, these days is often unmanageable. There was a study recently on “presenteeism” which is about people carrying on going into work and carrying on, because they are too scared to tell their manager or whoever that they are unwell. In the study it said that sometimes this was being physically unwell sometimes mentally unwell. We all know that if you ignore a physical health condition it gets worse, but it can be the same with a mental health condition. So STOP take a break, let yourself rest and recover. Like when you are trying to learn something new, and you do it and you do it, over and over, but if you stop have a good nights sleep the next day, you can do it, because the brain has rested. Beacon Light Counselling is a flexible versatile counselling service with hours that can fit round your family and work life, and sessions face to face or FaceTime/ Skype. • June 1st sees a group of friends gathering in London and for many of us it’s the first time we’ll meet. Social media has bought us together and we’re doing it on the “Naughty Bus”! I’m Donna Siggers: twice published crime thriller author, biographer, poet and scriptwriter. I’ve also been known to give the occasional speech. Writing has given me direction, clarity and validation after a serious head injury and is now providing me with fantastic opportunities. I use my experiences and knowledge to twist into crime fiction stories that are
believable, gritty and nail-bitingly terrifying to the point I get messages from readers to ask if I’m actually alright. I’ve been told that, for a female author I should consider holding back a little more but that’s what sets me apart from other authors – I do not shy away from reality or taboo. Instead I’ll write in a way that gives you the details to set your imagination on fire, your nerves on edge and leave you craving the next installment! My debut novel, Broken won
an award in 2018 which placed me on a global stage, literally. Speaking to an audience of four-hundred which was also live-streamed around the world to over one million more, I suddenly found my extrovert and I've not looked back.

  • Easter has been relaxing, enjoyable and revealing for me. A wonderful time spent with family, a little quiet time to make some notes and I also knocked myself unconscious. I’m recovering well from my treatment of the past two weeks but it’s left me wobbly on my feet: hitting my head is the last thing I needed but it happened and hard. Taking the positives from this, the pain hasn’t caused a seizure which means its not affected the nerve damage any further. More importantly for me I’ve had my face smacked by a door frame, which could easily have triggered my PTSD considering the assault I endured yet it didn’t – I stayed in control when I regained consciousness and that is progress worthy of celebration. I’m gaining strength again as a result of the treatment so the two weeks of pain and fitting it caused, although exhausting both physically and psychologically, has been worth it. I write to heal - books are available on Amazon.

  • I know your probably fed up of people telling you that “it’s better to talk” “don’t bottle things up” “write your feelings down” when you really don’t want to talk. I 100% get that. There’s times when I can’t speak the pain I am feeling inside, I guess I felt like if I said it out loud, it would make it true. But (and I am not just saying this) when I finally started speaking up I felt so much better for It, and I started to get the help I really needed. People should be proud of you when you finally decide to speak up. It takes so much courage. Speaking up also means you want/need help, and that is the first step to recovery.
From my own experience I know that there are people who won’t listen and won’t understand, and instead of giving up, brush it off and find someone else you trust to help you, and give you advice. Someone will listen.
I know you probably don’t want to talk, but I can guarantee it will help you, even if it’s ever so slightly.
It is okay to talk, I never used to think it was... but it really is.
