  • As humans, our brains are hardwired to solve problems. And that proclivity has served us well throughout our evolution:
•
"Three bears walk into a cave. Two bears exit the cave. Let’s wait until the last bear walks out of the cave before we go in."
•
A simple math problem like the one I just described probably saved many lives in ancestral times! Under certain circumstances, three minus two can be the difference between life and death.
•
3x🐻- 2x🐻 = 💀
•
On the other hand, complex equations allow us to calculate coordinates, send people to the moon and establish complex models of the universe!
•
Humans are problem solvers: it is what the brain naturally tries to do. This aptitude is very useful in many facets of our lives.
•
However, when it comes down to understanding abstract art, your rational brain, the natural problem solver, is of very little use.
•
As abstract art bypasses the rules of form and design as they are usually organized in the world, our rational brain will automatically attempt to “solve” it!
•
In order to appreciate abstract art, you need to free your mind of the concepts of form, flow and design as you know them. Your rational brain will not help you “get it” – you sort of have to let go and take it all in. You have to allow yourself to become a passenger and travel through the piece, within yourself.
•
“Getting” the meaning of a piece may bring a temporary feeling of satisfaction or victory... but allowing yourself to float in its mystery will have a much more enduring effect!
•
What if abstract art was not intended to be solved, but experienced?

  • Have you ever been to an exhibit at an art gallery or museum where every attendee looks snobbish?
•
No matter who the artist is: they always act as if they “get it” and it’s just “so delightfully brilliant”! You don’t get it? They’ll make you feel so small for not getting it.
•
Or they might just say “it’s so derivative and uninspired” because it might remind them of something some obscure artist might have done 35 years ago. You don’t like it? They will belittle you and feel inadequate for liking it.
•
You can probably picture them in your mind; they are easily recognizable.
•
I’m an artist and I promise you: I can’t stand that crowd. I avoid these parasites like the plague.
•
If I attend an event and that’s the crowd, chances are I’m going to leave. Unless the artist whose event it is a really good friend.
•
I’m really happy and proud to say that none of my customers so far has been this way. I feel extremely fortunate that I’ve only ever dealt with warm, gentle and caring people. 😊
•
Every time I attend art events, it’s a reminder that YOU guys are the best 🥰
•
Art should not be pretentious!
•
Art should be an open invitation to dialogue, not a dialogue stopper.
•
I don’t have a solution to fix the arts world, except trying to share my perspective...
•
But I’m curious... what do you think? What steps can we take to make art more accessible and less elitist???

  • 2020 @artistprojectto done! What an amazing weekend! Being surrounded by incredibly talented people who create incredibly gorgeous and provocative and inspiring art. I was a serious fan-girl with some of the other artists who I met for the first time, I got to hug and kiss my friends I haven’t seen since last year, I met some new friends (artists and staff alike!) who are really really supportive and kind and nice people. You know who you all are! I am so honoured to be part of the @artistprojectto community! Next year will be my 5th year and I already can’t wait! #art #artistsoninstagram #artistproject #artistprojectto #artistproject2020 #torontoart #torontoartist

  • “It may be, that our eyelids might open some morning upon a world that had been refashioned anew in the darkness for our pleasure, a world in which things would have fresh shapes and colors, and be changed, or have little or no place, or survive, at any rate, and no conscience form of obligation or regret.”
