  • This Black History Month, I'm excited to partner with @delta to share one of my favorite Black travel stories! #ad ⠀
My full name is Gabby Beckford. My father is Jamaican and immigrated to the U.S. at age 12. My surname isn't extremely common, but I have run into Beckfords in New York, Toronto, London, and even Dubai, and each one has been Jamaican. (You may be familiar with my long lost Uncle, Tyson? 💁🏿‍♂️)
⠀
Last year for my birthday my friend and I took an impromptu trip and ended up in the U.S. Virgin Islands for a long weekend. I knew virtually nothing about the territory except that Americans didn't need a passport to visit so I expected it to be extremely tourist-centric. And it was. However, one of my followers from St. Thomas offered to meet up and help us tap into its true Afro-Caribbean culture.
⠀
We ate oxtail, johnnycakes, and fungi so good I had to look around and make sure it wasn't my Grandma back there cooking. We learned how being colonized more than 7 times had affected the island's population demographics, making it a multiracial melting pot of Caribbean Islanders—so much so that I was assumed to be local multiple times!
⠀
However, the most shocking experience had to be when a waiter saw my receipt, recognized my last name, and told me he was friends with a few Beckfords. I was floored. What are the odds?!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Looking back it all seems extremely... fated.
⠀
To board a random flight, on a random day, to a random destination, and find so much home.
⠀
My birthday gift from the universe was knowing that no matter where I go, a piece of home will never be far. Whether it's in a similar physical feature, a nostalgic food, or a literal stray Beckford wandering around like I am. And that when I travel and learn about other Black cultures, I am inevitably learning more about myself.
⠀
With the Diaspora, the world is home because—as the Jamaican national motto goes—'𝗢𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆, 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲' ❤️

  • The Floating breakfast is overrated. It only looks cool in photos guys I’m going to be real. .
In Bali I had it twice, the first time at my villa in Ubud. It looked pretty but it weren’t very tasty. You can’t eat it in the pool because it is a struggle to hold on to the heavy tray. However, my second experience at @sheratonkuta was much better!
The breakfast was delicious 😋 I booked it for an early morning start at 7 am so I could have the pool all to myself ☺️. .
So based on my experiences it’s defo a hit and miss. Also, remember the longer you take trying to get the ‘perfect’ pic, the quicker your food turns ice cold! It looks pretty for the photo tho... lol

  • “If you ever get the chance, learn who you are when the world isn’t demanding you to be one way or another.” - @briannawiest
.
My intention for this solo trip was to experience. To experience the magic in nature, the magic in human connection, the magic in solitude.

I want to surf. I want to adventure. I want to create. I want to connect.

I want to learn. I want to listen. I want to observe.

I want to take risks, to push myself out of my comfort zone and do the things my intuition wants me to do. To not just choose comfort, but to choose discomfort and know that lessons and breakthroughs rest on the other side.

I want to show myself I am capable. Capable of independence. Capable of new. Capable of using all my tools in a new environment, where a million things could go wrong, but a million things could also go right.

I am ready. Ready to step into the version of myself that is fueled by the heart.

She doesn’t question her value. She knows that she is intrinsically valuable simply for existing. Simply for putting herself out there.

That’s what matters. That’s what counts.

And let these words be a reminder to do the damn thing. Even when it’s scary, even when it is unknown. Even if there is a chance of a great white shark in the sea. Ride the wave. Take the trip. Go experience life.

  • When we moved to London, I was nervous about where we were going to live because I never wanted to live in a dorm again, and I didn't want to sign a lease without seeing a place first. So to make things simpler, I booked an Airbnb. But that one Airbnb turned into 6 months of Airbnb-hopping around London. It's definitely been a learning experience and here are some pros and cons I've encountered along the way.

PRO: You don't have to sign a lease so you have more freedom to move whenever you please.
CON: Most Airbnbs will only let you stay for 3 or 4 months max, so you have to pack up and move more often (which for someone like me with a lot of luggage, the struggle is real). PRO: You get to learn new parts of the city by trying out different areas.

CON: It can actually be more expensive than just renting. Leasing an unfurnished flat would technically be a better deal in the long run.
PRO: You don't have to stress about all the little bills for electricity or wifi because it's all included. Some places even have TV with all the channels you could ever want.
CON: If the wifi sucks, there's not much you can do about it 😭
PRO: You can end up getting a whole house or large flat to yourself, which makes it feel so much more homey.
CON: Whoever owns the place usually has all their stuff there so it feels a bit like housesitting. You're basically paying to watch their stuff.

  • Day 4 in the Galápagos was, quite frankly, the adventure of a lifetime. I will split it into two parts.✌🏾
.
I woke up to rain in a bit of a panic because I...left my rain jacket on Santa Cruz Island and had an 11-mile volcano trek that day. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I mentally prepared to ‘do the damn thing’ in my bathing suit, but lo()ng story short, I managed to buy a poncho at a bodega, and off I went to a group tour to Sierra Negra Volcano. 🙏🏾
.
By the time we got to the site, there was no rain! The sky cleared up, and we ascended to the caldera of the volcano, which last erupted in 2018, and 2005 before that.
.
This was great! Learning about the area, and getting some exercise in (I occasionally went ahead of the group to get that heart rate 🆙). Then there was a rest stop prior to descending into Volcanchico. I went a bit ahead again, and a light, refreshing rain started to fall. Then it got heavier. ...and heavier...

  • NOCHES EN LA HABANA.
My time in Cuba was mostly magical. There were a few moments when I had to check my American privilege, like the time I legit said,
“oh sh!t I’m out of money and can’t use an ATM.” As if the American dollar should be accepted everywhere.
🤦🏾‍♂️
Needless to say, I had to phone-a-friend to have them western union me some more coins (using my credit card of course).
😩
Looking forward going back this year, for an educational experience curated by my fam, @hownottotravellikeabasicbitch. Stay tuned, and you’re most definitely sleeping if you’re not following her!!
💁🏾‍♂️
Also, it was hot AF, in these #havanastreets 🥵 so y’all better enjoy this sweaty photo.

  • The Pint Sized Traveler turns ✌🏾😳 Wow. I can't believe I've been sharing the journey I've been on for two whole years. It feels like I was just sitting in a tiny apartment in The Netherlands, overthinking, re-reading, re-writing and second-guessing whether to hit publish on Wordpress because I knew once I put myself out there, turning back wasn't an option. 🙌🏾🙃⁣
⁣
The journey has been anything but easy. The week before I published my website, my laptop and camera were stolen. 😒 I had every excuse to give up before I even started. From that point on, I can't even begin to count the number of challenges that have pushed me to want to give up. At this point, if this journey has even inspired one person to get up and see the world for themselves. I can say that I am happy that I started.⁣
⁣
I say all of this to encourage you! 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭. Whatever that looks like. A Google search. A voice note. A sketch. Whatever excites you and makes you want to talk for hours on end, make time & explore that more. That application, that business, that song, that podcast, that book. Start it. It doesn't have to be perfect...it won't be perfect (honestly). 🤷🏾 But it will be a start and you can handle that much! ☝🏾⁣
⁣
That is the only difference between those who achieve and those who don't...a start. Keep this in the forefront of your mind: You lack nothing, there isn't anything you can't learn, and you deserve a life that makes you want to leap out of bed with enthusiasm each day. ⁣
⁣
When the picture is bigger than you, you will be surprised at the lengths you go to make things happen. I hope you take this personally. Take this as a sign to start or to keep going. The world needs what you've got. ⁣
