This week's episode really stuck with me long after our recording ended. Tumbbad 2018 is an Indian horror film about greed, grandma and grabbing gold in as little time as possible so a demon god doesn't gobble you up!
This seriously was a surprising watch to both of us. Check out this episode on iTunes, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts! Also look this movie up on Amazon Prime. It's definitely worth a viewing!

Reeling from the effects of this phenomenal horror film "Tumbbad" (Hindi). Hands down, the best Indian horror movie I've ever watched. Everything about this movie is mind-blowing. The unique story, the eerie atmosphere, the intense screenplay and the brilliant acting. But the best thing about the movie is its background score by #jesperkyd . Oh my god! I can't find words to describe how great it is. Highly highly recommended movie. #tumbbad#tumbbadthefilm#horrormovies#horrorfilm#indiancinema#backgroundscore
Indian cinema drifts away from the generic horror conventions with Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad's 'Tumbbad'. The flim is an elegant expression of how horror can be much more than just jump-scares and haunted houses which finds home in both, Indian and Western cinema.
The story takes place in the village of Tumbbad where prevails the legend of Haster, a mystical deity in possession of gold but greedy for food. Young Vinayak Rao grows up craving for Haster's treasure but is obliged to leave the village. He finally discovers the treasure after growing up and doesn't hesitate to risk his life everytime he needs to make use of it. His obsession grows with time and is eventually passed on to his son, Pandurang who is as greedy as his father.
The plot proves to be one of the strongest element of the film for it's uniqueness and creativity. It instills fear using fantasy as well as human emotions.
The VFX succesfully keeps up with the feel of the movie. Such a brilliant work of VFX was never before seen in Bollywood and it evidently remains to be the most appreciated element of the film.
Cinematographer, Pankaj Kumar, does a splendid job in maintaining the mood throughout the movie. Every scene portrays the darkness and depth of the story. The shots of landscape, bazaars and mansion add to the beauty of the complete experience.
Sohum Shah delivers an excellent performance as Vinayak's avid but brave character. Mohammad Samad gives a mind-blowing performance by portraying both, Pandurang as well as Dadi, an older, horrifying woman doomed with the curse of Haster. To showcase a preteen child and a character scarier than Haster is definately not a piece of cake but Samad does it flawlessly.
The making of 'Tumbbad' lasted for six whole years but the end result has given Indian horror movies a completely different face and perspective.

While casting for Tumbbad, we travelled for six months in the interiors of Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Our vision was to identify actors who were not exposed to urbaness,we auditioned children from rural government schools, men and women from several villages.
We wanted the characters to look authentic and real like they belong to the era and setup in which movie was based.
Tumbbad recently won six awards in various categories at Power Brands. Wayward monk congratulates everyone associated with the film.

Men are more sinister than the demons they face. Tumbbad, not only just a movie; it indeed is a great cinematic experience. The tale is a one person's story, Vinayak.Sohum Shah undoubtedly stood out in playing this character. Vinayak's three generations were typically showed in the movie, the movie's back drop has three parts feudal, imperial and Capitalistic which was shown by the era of Sarkar, when Vinayak became Sarkar and when Bharat Sarkar came in respectively. The one character, despite being in the back drop gives you the opportunity to go completely crazy with her is the "grandmother". The story of grandmother is never revealed completely still it holds a very strong position. This movie certainly is a homage to the 80's horror story of a bhootiya purani haveli with khazana and all. Hastar is a character who stays in your mind long time after you watch the movie. Everything in this movies is connected. Not realistic but logical at least not metaphysical. Great story line with great work by the team.
Truly a visual treat. #tumbbad#tumbbadthefilm#bollywooddance#sohumshah#eros#erosnow#filmcompanion#jammypants4#jammypants#rahi#anandlrai#bollywood#moviebuff
Ancient folklore, legends, and mythologies of various religions have all warned humanity against greed in different ways. Be it Lord Krishna calling it one of the gates leading to self-destruction in The Geeta, or the fates of Tantalus in Greek mythology and Fafnir in Nordic tales, or even the legend of King Midas of Phrygia who was given the boon of a golden touch, greed has consistently been portrayed as the path to downfall of men and gods.
But when greed consumes a man completely, there is no saving him.
Vinayak Rao receives in inheritance a large mansion where he has grown up hearing tales of a buried treasure, and the glint of that hidden gold stays in his eyes even after he leaves Tumbbad.
But more than the mansion and the treasure, what Vinayak Rao inherited in great proportions was greed. Vinayak is a shrewd opportunist and will not hesitate to sell his own family out in desperate times if it benefits him. And greed, being core to Vinayak's self, is not only limited to his desires for money but also spreads to his needs of the flesh, as we see Vinayak readily keep a mistress to serve him.
His son, Pandurang, is the only person in the world that is dearer to Vinayak than wealth. In spite of that, he plants the seed of greed in Pandurang at a very young age.
When Pandurang suggests stealing Hastar's entire pouch instead of a few coins, Vinayak seems both impressed and scared. A part of him is proud that his son is a better schemer than him, but another more sensible part can witness the avaricious monster growing much more aggressively in his son. Even at a time when they are being attacked by multiple forms of Hastar, Pandurang's priority is to gather coins first and save his own life later; and this would have been Vinayak's priority as well had he not been a father by then.
In the end, after having fallen prey to Hastar and being aware that he is going to die soon (or worse, live like that), Vinayak was only focused on giving the pouch to his son.
Vinayak, much like Sméagol/Gollum from LOTR, gets lured into the dark and devastating charm of greed that eventually turns him into a monstrosity. #characterbiopsies #tumbbad #sohumshah

The film is beautifully shot. The scenes shuttle between oppressive tunnels and sweeping rain-pummelled hills, colour-graded to a moody palette. The sets are also incredibly, most notably the actual temple itself. With heavy-spiked doors and stony foundations that feel a million years old, it adds credence to the ancient myth.

As two more days remaining for the end of 2018 ....filmmakers in India this year were clever enough for they made sure "story is [email protected]#$**g important". But that one movie which deserves a wide applaud and my favourite too was TUMBBAD. Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, this movie is a gem for Indian cinema. He wrote the first draft of the movie in 1997. No doubt ....his patience paid off. Very masterfully shot. The production design was so accurate 💥👌 . The background score was so intense and gripping. This movie will remain in my brain and in my heart till the end ❤. Must watch film ...truly a must watch !!! #tumbbadthefilm

TUMBBAD by debutante Rahi Anil Barve is at once poetic, lilting and agonizing. It is so NOT SIMPLY a horror movie as most of us Indians will want to slot every movie into a genre. It will stay with you long after you have seen it. You wont want to rush back to theaters to rewatch it, but it will have seeped into your consciousness enough for it to be a pop-up dream, rousing you suddenly in thoughts and ruminations. It's a story of the horrors of some of man's original sins. Its clearly a labor of love. Nothing like it as far as my knowledge goes has been made in Indian cinema. For all lovers of story telling of the original kind to emerge out of our immense and rich traditions of kathaakaari, this movie needs to seen, applauded and encouraged. If you have loved PANS LABRYINTH in the past, then go watch TUMBBAD for what we can give to the world in the form of the fantastical telling. I so wish the distributors give it a proper international release as it deserves. It is quite mesmerizing. All its faults get swept away in the end in its strong visual story telling, so sweeping, so overpowering, that is ALL that remains with you. #tumbbad#tumbbadthefilm

Synopsis: A greedy man is obsessed on finding an ancestral treasure that has a curse. Does he find it? whats the curse? All questions get answered.
Thumbs Up👍: The story is brilliant. The concept is really unique. Great care has been taken while designing the sets and the art. VFX used is simply outstanding for a budget of 10CR.
Thumbs down 👎: The second chapter starts on a confusing note, but due to the characters dressing you come to know of the period.
Comments: @shah_sohum is brilliant. All the other actors also make a mark. But it is the Story that is the real winner that keeps you on the edge of your seat for the whole course of the film.
Quickwords: It is thrilling, scary and made with utmost care on the details. DO NOT miss Tumbbad, its a marvelous piece of art.
