Fundamentals. Formulas. Evolutions. By @apday, @fachauld & @dkproprietors
.
1/3. Or, The Holy Grail Part II. This is the follow up to outstanding Death & Co: Modern Classics by cocktail visionaries Alex Day, Nick Fauchald and David Kaplan. Again, I’ll be splitting Cocktail Codex into 3 posts to deliver the best overview.
.
Cocktail Codex has a totally different feel to Modern Classics however the content is equally of the same level of quality if not even more so.
.
We open with the bold statement “There are only six Cocktails”. Cocktail Codex is constructed from the theory that there are only six basic cocktail root-recipe templates that all cocktails derive from: The Old-Fashioned, The Martini, The Daiquiri, The Sidecar, The Whisky Highball and The Flip.
.
Following this statement, which we’ll come back to, we’re greeted with a warming preface from Alex Day expressing his first encounter with Death & Co and how he came to work there. He goes on to explain the importance of understanding cocktails as a posed to just being able to memorise a drinks spec (recipe). Following this is the introduction which gives a great indication of the book as a whole.
.
The book aims to teach the internal mechanics of all cocktails using these six templates to demystify recipes and inspire creativity; featuring more than 350 cocktails evolved from these six easily identifiable root recipes it’s hard to argue with their theology. I’ve personally always categorised this down to about 10 different families but since exploring this book I’m now convinced.
.
The chapters are organised into the six key cocktail templates which features the origins of each cocktail along with the root recipe and their ideal interpretation. Breaking down the cocktail each chapter explore the core, the balance and the seasoning of each cocktail. The core being the base spirit in most cases i.e Bourbon or Rye in an Old Fashioned, the balance being the Vermouth in a martini and the seasoning in the case of a daiquiri being the garnish.
.
Part 2 to follow.
.
Cocktail: Classic Highball

2oz Scotch
6oz Cold Seltzer
