  • Welcome to Exmoor! We're here with @classic_cottages to explore the best that Exmoor has to offer. First stop, the moors, where after just 10 minutes on the road we came across our very first Exmoor ponies. They were galloping alongside the car, before crossing the road right in front of us and going to graze amongst the gorse bushes. Such an incredible encounter.

  • Someone once told me: the ideas that make you laugh out loud are the ones you want to follow. I wholeheartedly agree. The curiosities that light you up and thoughts make you giggle are probably the pursuits most worth exploring... you know, like turning an abandoned backyard shed into a modern @airbnb. 〰️

  • AD | Let's take a moment to talk about hostels 🌞 When @hostellingscotland asked Yvette and me if we wanted to drive the #NC500 and stay at their hostels along the way, our answer was a no brainer. Both of us had stayed at their hostels in the past and of course, we also had worked with them before. We knew that we could expect a mature hostel experience with great facilities and friendly staff!

But what do I mean by "mature hostel experience"? 🧐

Hostelling often has a certain reputation for being dirt-cheap and sub-standard - accommodation for young folks who want to save money and won't mind putting up with a lack of quality or hygiene in return. And many hostels I've encountered during my travels abroad have been like that. I wasn't a fan... @hostellingscotland hostels are different though. Having stayed in several before and now 8 more on the NC500, I know that while they offer affordable accommodation, they also cater to a high standard. You don't have to stay in stuffy overcrowded dorms, share a bathroom with a whole floor, navigate a dirty kitchen or put up with rowdy gap-year travellers in the common area.
You can sleep in safe private rooms, often with en-suite bathrooms. You can prepare your own meals in a top-notch kitchen. You can stay in some of the quirkiest places in prime locations with sea views and beaches at your doorstep. And you can meet like-minded travellers of all ages.

During our NC500 trip, we stayed at @hostellingscotland hostels in Inverness, Torridon, Gairloch Sands, Ullapool and Achmelvich Beach, checked out the hostel in Durness and spent nights at the affiliate hostels in Tongue and Helmsdale. Each one is completely unique. The character of the hostel managers (or owners) shine through in the decor as well as the atmosphere, but everywhere we were greeted with the same warmth and hospitality.

I find it hard to pick a favourite, but here are some reasons to love some of the hostels I just experienced:
- Torridon for the hiking opportunities
- Gairloch Sands for the views
- Achmelvich Beach for its proximity to the beach, &
- Helmsdale for its unique architecture and kick-ass owner!

I'm so team #GoHostelling!! 🛌
