Starlight
The milky way becomes so bright the higher you go, after driving through the clouds the sky gave way to the universes endless expanse. Out of all the places i’ve traveled to capture dark skies, right at home on Haleakala is still one of the best places in the world to experience the night sky.

Tasman Lake, NZ... Ask us anything!

It has been a while since we have done one of these and because astro season has officially started for 2018, we thought we would give you guys the chance to ask us any questions you might have about photography or social media. Looking forward to chatting to you legends! 😁

  • Amazing nightscape by @erictheastrojunkie
This last weekend I got to spend a few days and nights in one of those places you just can't possibly describe in a few words, so I won't. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well this image is composed from 15 exposures, soooo...15,000 words worth by my math. Unfortunately Instagram has character limits so you get spared such a long description. Instead just enjoy this image of a truly magical place, I hope you enjoy it as much as I got to take and make it. I'm a lucky man to live in a place with places to explore like this, luckier yet that I get to explore it with a girlfriend like @utahastrophotography and a friend like @mac_latimer_!

15 exposures went into this image, 10 for the foreground and 5 for the sky, all taken with a Nikon Z7 and Nikkor 50mm f1.8S lens on a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer Mini tracking mount. Foreground exposures are 2 minutes at ISO 800 and f2, sky exposures are 3 minutes at ISO 800 and f2.8.

Earth day. ⁣⁣
I love seeing all the earth day posts ⁣⁣
But earth day isn’t simply about posting a pretty photo of nature on social media and #earthday. ⁣⁣
Every day is earth day⁣⁣ (#everydayisearthday)
Every day should be earth day⁣⁣
Earth day should be a habit, not a passing thing⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Drop a comment below on a earth friendly habit you’ve developed or plan to. ⁣
⁣⁣
For me it’s recycling and picking up trash when I’m outdoors. Sometimes, especially after work, I’ll see trash near my car and I’ll pick it up. At first I’d do it without gloves but now I have a box of gloves and garbage bag handy in my car (highly recommend). If it is recyclable, I will go home and sort it. ⁣
⁣
Another thing I’ve personally been working on reducing is my meat and dairy consumption (not going full on vegan) but cutting back on those foods wherever I can. ⁣⁣

  • Earth Day. I have mixed feelings about only giving one day back to this beautiful place this planet that we call home. Every day should be about the earth, every day we should focus on planting more trees and cleaning more trails and every day we should be spending time cleaning our rivers and oceans. I’ll be getting out on a few upcoming trail clean ups and if you use the parks and trails — maybe look into organizing a trail cleanup in your local area. It’s the little things that will eventually go the longest way, even if all we get is one day📍Goblin Valley State Park, Green River Valley, Utah #everydayearthday

  • Last time I was here with friends, two of which who had never been to Zion. I wanted them to see everything but not be rushed, but in the end it felt rushed. I think next time just need to stand back a bit and enjoy it for what it is.
Location: Zion National Park, Utah. (@zionnps @nationalparkservice @usinterior)
Specs: Nikon Z 7 w/Nikkor Z 24-70 f/4 S, two-shot vertical pano edited with Adobe Lightroom (@nikonusa @lightroom)

  • Happy Earth Day everyone! Today is a day of appreciation of all the amazing things and places on this Earth, but it can also be a day of making change. I don’t always live as sustainably as I could, so I’m using today to make some personal conservation minded resolutions. Sometimes these small changes can seem like they don’t do much, but in reality they add up quickly. Take today to challenge yourself to make a change for the better, and maybe we’ll be able to appreciate what we have a little longer.

  • Hope you are getting out in the wild places this Earth Day! 🌎

This morning I escaped for a brief run/hike above the city. Spring has come. The oaks are still dormant but the grasses are green and the wildflowers are beginning to bloom. .
How are you celebrating our beautiful earth today?

  • Happy Earth Day with a look down the Waterpocket Fold in Capitol Reef National Park.

The big cloud overhead never moved, even though the wind moved the wispy clouds around it pretty quickly.  I'm guessing its a lenticular cloud, usually formed when winds are blown against a large surface object and suddenly deflected upwards.  The change in pressure forms a cloud that seems to hang in place.  If you notice it also seems to follow the contours of the fold, trailing off in the distance to the right, so it could be the air hitting the rocks of the fold and bouncing up.  Also the La Sal mountains are hiding just over the cliffs in this view, it may be caused by them.  Or maybe both?
But it's fascinating to see how the many processes of the earth interact with eachother in ways that may not be apparent to us at first.

  • When @peter_pannnn and I first drove into Moab last April we haphazardly pulled over here to take some initial photos of our trip and admire the uniqueness of the landscape. Fast forward to our second trip to Moab this past week, and after doing some heavy photo research I realized that this spot was already a well known photography location. So in the middle of the day with nothing to do we decided to drive back out here and take a second stab at getting some cool shots from this viewpoint. Photographically, this spot is special because all of the elements of the landscape come together in one. You can see the Colorado river winding toward the desert in the foreground, the unique Fisher Towers standing tall in the background, and the La Sal mountain range off in the distance peaking through the clouds. Personally, this spot is special to me because it takes me back to that first feeling of discovering Moab for ourselves, and knowing that some unknown adventure was about to unfold. 🔥🏔⛺️🌀
