I’m a PROUD grad of #USC and anyone who knows me knows how hard I worked to get there on scholarship.
2 degrees in 4 years. 10+ internships (mostly unpaid). 5+ jobs to pay for housing & expenses #FightOn ❤️💛✌🏼
I’m sick and tired of this sadly necessary story! The 50% lifetime risk of #HIV infection — 1:2 for black men vs. 1:11 for white men — seems awfully suspicious and deliberate. Oh right, GENOCIDE. .
No matter what tactics a state employs, “medication has become the simple part of H.I.V.,” Dr. Mena said. “What’s been missing is the political will.”
STOP KILLING US! End discrimination and cultural stigmas, social inequities and barriers to entry. It’s all connected: opportunity and access to fair education, employment, housing, health insurance, etc. ensures DECREASED risk for all. Oh right, but #edbuck and operation #varsityblues . #LGBTQ#POC#queer#YGBQ#gayblackmen#nytimes
Just a week after the #VarsityBlues scandal, we have a new #admissions scandal, but it doesn’t involve the Ivys or celebrities, so I doubt it’ll get a fraction of the attention. Only 7 black students accepted to #NYC 's top HS #Stuyvesant …out of 895.
This level of #segregation is outrageous. In a city where more than a quarter of public school children are black, there is no way to defend the fact that less than 1% of those admitted to our most prestigious high school are black. Clearly our admissions system is broken.
And the data isn’t much better for other #SpecializedHighSchools . At #NYC ’s 2nd most prestigious high school, #BronxScience , only 12 of 803 admitted students are black. Numerous other groups are also systematically under-represented.
I’m not sure what the answer is, I don’t know if we need to reform the #SpecializedHS admissions test or ditch it all together. What is do know is that NYC is falling short of our ideals and betraying the promise of what our public schools should be.
I know how it looks right now- rich people cheating into top colleges can make folks feel like everyone is doing it and cheating is the only way to win. It is not. The truth is that there is no win where there is cheating. Building a life on lies and deception is wrongheaded because these kinds of lives generally crumble.
It is easy to shake our heads at $1M bribes and egregious photoshopping, but it is equally bad to list invented clubs or exaggerated service. Having someone sit for the SAT is out of reach for most, but having someone else write the admissions essays? And I have heard too many college admissions officers tell stories of parents calling and pretending to be their kid and of parents emailing from their kid’s account.
The Journey to College does not have to be a stressful nightmare. But I know that people routinely underestimate the time and planning required and then find themselves with only a year or two (or a month or two!) to make a strong application for top colleges. It is like showing up for class to discover that the big exam is TODAY- and you thought you had weeks to study. Panic can make for poor decisions. Why not consider #varsityblues a teachable moment and an opportunity to affirm your personal values?

Some sun salutations to get stretched and ready for the practice round before #varsityblues

This is from an article in the Wall Street Journal re: the college process and the recent Varsity Blues scandal. However, the last sentence is really spot-on advice for healthy parenting, at any time and at any age, no matter how our children have been delivered into our lives. I wanted to share on this Monday because, honestly, being seen and valued as individuals (cherishing and honoring individuality) is what we all desire. To be who we are, and to be loved as we are.
Monday! NEW Ep. of SYMPATHETIC MONSTERS up NOW at thatsgoodpod .com!

For your consideration: critically take into account the financial disenfranchisement people of color have experienced in this country from chattel slavery to sharecropping to segregation to the preschool to prison pipelines, include housing redlining and discrimination in the education system and employment arenas.
This country of “wealth and opportunity” was literally built on either the deaths of the native people here, the backs of the work done by black people brought over & the dismissal and discrimination of all black and brown folks who survived those ordeals.
This idea of white majority successes depends heavily on maintaining the oppressions of other groups. With all this information and the slides presented really consider the sheer and utter gaslighting that is happening with the rhetoric of the black community simply needing to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” maintain a fair living in this country. #foh

I had to repost this one for a couple reasons. First of all, after watching the video, I had a couple people misquote lyrics (I'm thankful for the listens tho 😂). I always viewed rap lyrics like poetry, so I thought it was cool when people sort of derived their own meaning from songs. If I have chance though, I wont let my truth be mistaken.
Most importantly this for my mom though. She told me after the second video I posted "I saw your video! It's so nice, but you know I cant hear nothing you saying. Do you not want me to know?" 😂😂 Somebody tell my mama I ain't got nothing to hide, but that ultimately, #theresamessage .
I would like to know your thoughts on the varsity blues scandal, what do you guys think about the press using #oliviajade#loriloughlin and #Bella as the face of the scandal along with felicity Hoffman. Is that fair or they should talk about the other 50 involved ? 🤔 #usc

While celebrities like Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin buy their children's admission to elite universities, low-income students continue to be left behind due to systemic barriers. That's why Jennifer launched a petition to pressure the College Board to reverse their plans to charge students extra fees for exams. Join Jennifer’s campaign and tell the College Board to put students over profits. #varsityblues#collegeadmissions#collegeboard#education#apexams

The past month has been a wild one in the realm of learning disability advocacy. In the wake of the recent #VarsityBlues college admissions scandal, I had the privilege of being interviewed by the @seattletimes, @chronicleofhighered, @starthereabc, and @abcnews live. If you want to see awkward me, you better check out the ABC News Live interview. (Link for all interviews in bio.) As an individual with documented #LD , I fight daily against the invalidation of my disabilities. They level the playing field; they do not give us an unfair advantage. Accommodations are a small, yet critical part of the educational experience for a person with with LD, but one that helps us to unlock the gatekeeping mechanisms preventing us from achieving self-actualization. Because of this scandal, the wrong belief that accommodations regularly serve as a guise is emboldened. We’ve alway gotten sideways glances, but now we’re concerned about outright hostility. I want to give a special shoutout to @savvy1forever for being such a fantastic friend and role model. She also had a handful of interviews, and they rocked the house, so you best not neglect those! (Link also in bio.) It is because @whitmancollege, @e2enational, & @ncldorg that I am able to share so boldly my strengths and weaknesses.
Years ago a tutoring company asked if I would take several online classes for a student in exchange for a ridiculously large sum of money. I said no.
Cheating our kids into and through college does nothing positive for them... However, this trend says a lot about the culture we have developed, that obsesses with every moment of our children's lives meeting an imaginary measuring stick. .
Let's free them of all the stress and pressure we are transferring, from the larger dysfunctional culture, to them, and help our kids find better, more inspiring ways to reach for potential!
