  • Draugurinn Alsjáandi sem vofir þarna í vinstra horninu? Það er auðvitað töluvert síðan hann náðist á mynd síðast en mér tókst að fanga hann með iphone 8 plus. Plúsinn er ekki þarna bara uppá punt sko! Draugurinn var á ferð um Vestfirði í dag og fylgdi vindátt yfir hinn stórkostlega foss Dynjandi sem ég sá með berum augum⚡️og í allri sinni dýrð ⚡️í fyrsta sinn í dag! Móðir náttúra! #vestfirðir #westfjords #draugar #ghosts #Ísland ##Iceland

  • the second #beach that @beachtrash_ and i cleaned-up, also north of #drangsnes and near #strandir in the #westfjords. i found an odd lightbulb, and the kelp had entangled tons of #plastic #netting. again, however, we barely made a dent, and there were numerous #oystercatcher #birds nesting nearby... i could not believe how bad this beach was—not at all what i thought i would see in #rural #iceland. i hope that no one is getting the impression from my posts that icelanders are careless with their #litter! this problem is all of humankind’s fault. my sister’s research has found that although some #beachtrash(e.g., condoms, q-tips) stems from local communities dumping raw sewage into the ocean, the vast majority of #debris comes from the global #fishing sectors (e.g., #nets, which easily entangle #wildlife, and broken equipment) and garbage washing in from abroad. (i would also like to point out that communities in canada collectively annually dump over a hundred billion litres of untreated sewage into the ocean, including a number of major cities... british columbia is by far the worst offender) @amyyoh #ísland #trash #waste #vestfirðir

  • this remote #beach, located north of the village of #drangsnes (pop.: 67) and south of the #strandir coast in the #westfjords, was the first one that @beachtrash_ and i cleaned. there was a ton of #driftwood washed in from #siberia—and more #trash than we were able to gather (mostly small pieces of hard #plastic, but also ten shoes and some large #plastics too big to move). we had to stop after we filled up more garbage bags than we could fit into our vehicle. though it was a bit discouraging feeling like we barely made a difference, the sad sights we saw nearby—a #bird carcass riddled with plastic bits and an #oystercatcher nesting in a mound of plastic (last and second last pictures, respectively)—underscore the importance of this work. helping @amyyoh clean beaches makes me reflect upon the amount of plastic i use in my life, and i urge you to do the same 🤗 you never know where your plastic waste will wash up! it is a truly bizarre experience combing a beach and only finding one seashell (third picture), but heaps of #beachtrash... #iceland #ísland #wildlife #vestfirðir

  • cleaning up the beautiful #bolungarvík #beach in the #westfjords with @beachtrash_ my sister has found in her research that different types of beaches accumulate different types of trash; sandy beaches, like this one, and those with kelp often entangle plastic ropes and nets, sometimes forming large masses that she has dubbed “beach blobs,” while rocky beaches tend to trap small, hard pieces of plastic (though there is a lot of variation). these different types of materials each pose a unique set of threats to #wildlife #iceland #ísland #vestfirðir @amyyoh

  • #ísafjörður (pop.: 2500): capital of the #westfjords peninsula and home of the lovely @amyyoh. though its name means ‘ice fjord,’ there is no ice at this time of year! this locale was first settled in the 9th century, but the settlement was not granted municipal status until 1786. the view here is from the top of the mountains on the opposite side of the fjord. #isafjordur #iceland #ísland #vestfirðir
