  • From the Bern’s dinner. 1961 Château La Pointe from #Pomerol, in magnum. This started out pretty impressive, with a good amount of fruit remaining along with smoke and iron. The palate was silky and round, but with good acidity as well. Unfortunately, this one didn’t hold up and just sort of fell flat after an hour with fading fruit, which was more noticeable next to the impressive Langoa Barton. You’ll probably never see a magnum of this, but if you do, I would open it now.

  • 1994 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande from #Pauillac. You may have read in our posts how much we love the 1995 and 1996 Pichon Lalande, so it was interesting to check in on the 1994. As expected, the 1994 is nowhere near the 95 or 96, which are powerhouse wines that are among the best of each given vintage. While there is the signature tobacco/green pepper  streak that is so identifiable in their wines, this vintage suffers from a lack of ripeness and depth. This is a classic, rustic style of Bordeaux. This vintage was probably much better when young and just wasn’t built for aging. I would recommend passing on the 1994 Lalande and picking up the 1995 or 1995 instead (or even many other younger vintages, of course).

We’re back in one of our favorite appellations. Chateauneuf du Pape is one of those magical places where you can see the terroir change within a few paces.

@rococowines and I are in the classic rolled stones. The second picture is across the street and has chalky white limestone.

  • French Basque Country. Domaine Bordatto is Bixintxo and Pascal Aphuale, who are leading producers of natural cider in SW France. Every bottle from this extremely small production, farm-to-bottle operation is lovingly produced by this dynamic couple. Bixintxo started his career as a winemaker in Jurançon, but fell in love with cider, the beverage native to his village of Jaxu in the foothills of the Pyrenees. They founded Bordatto by cataloging & saving dozens of indigenous Basque apple varieties from extinction, combing the countryside & re-grafting these apples on the best slopes, which are normally reserved for grapes. Bixintxo knew he could craft a better cider by applying the organic farming methods utilized in vineyards, to apple orchards. Terroir is often overlooked when people talk about cider, but Bixintxo feels that characteristics of the site such as soil, orientation, tree age and varietal are just as important to cider as they are to wine and they are out to prove it.
