VOLCÁN DE ACATENANGO

As the sun faded behind us, the view from our campfire became mesmerizing. The group would sit & stare 👀 with baited breath at the live peak in our view, waiting for it's next exhale... Sometimes even calling to it, "Fuego, Fuego, Fuego!" 🔥 I called it Volcano TV 📺
-
It seemed that as the stars ✨ showed themselves, Volcán de Fuego became more comfortable and settled into a frequent rhythm of eruption. It was difficult to peel my eyes away from it's summit for fear of missing it's next beautiful painting of fire in the night sky. Each eruption inspired awe, caught my breath & stirred the slightest fear. I loved it. Even after I crawled into my sleeping bag to catch a few hours of sleep before our 4 am morning summit, I could feel the breath of the volcano 🌬️
-
In the earliest hours of the morning, a tremor preceded a large eruption and this was followed by the sound of rain 🌧️ on the tent. Rain, huh? It was surprising considering the clear day we had encountered hiking up to base camp. As I listened closer, I realized that what I was hearing was the sound of Volcán Fuego's ash falling around us. A reminder of her presence.
-
Our group arose at 4 am to finish the summit of Acatenango before the sunrise 🌄 Watching the sun peak over the top of the clouds from the top was well worth the effort. Plus, it got us a closer view of our friend from last night 😉

VOLCÁN DE ACATENANGO

While Patrick was working, I decided to hike a local Volcano 🌋 🤷
-
Volcán Acatenango towers above the adjacent active Volcán de Fuego at an impressive 13, 045 ft. The hike to our base camp took my group through 4 microclimates. It was spectacular to see the land change from agricultural farmland 🌽 to lush cloud forest 🌴 to alpine forest 🌲 and finally to volcanic terrain.
-
After 4 hours of hiking, we set up our camp at 10,500 ft. Next came the fun part - we enjoyed dinner, roasted marshmallows around the campfire 🔥 while awaiting our nighttime lava show. 📷 More photos to come!

😍🌋 #VolcanDeAcatenango #PasTresSportifsMaisPerseverants
