It’s something about the watts towers that seems to always amaze me. I remember growing up and seeing them in all the hood classic black films that were in south central and since then I made it a mission to fly out and learn the history behind the towers. Grateful to see a part of history in person. •

  • One of the hardest parts about being committed to a marathon, no matter what your position in the movement, is that you have to make sacrifices. This year marks the 5th year that I’ve lived outside of California and been away from South Central. There have been tough days, weeks and months but NEVER have I wanted to hop on a plane and go home as much as I’ve wanted these past two weeks. Since I couldn’t be there, my friends and family came through. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thank you cuz @bhappyberry for making these and handing them out for free in my absence. I know people who could not get a t-shirt, make a t-shirt or hoodie were happy to have something to hold and take home. 💙❤️🖤 Rest in Power @nipseyhussle 👑

  • Check this out. This image is from director @rj_sanchez it is one of a few from a post on his IG.This was during the making of the video speaking on Nipsey's daily commute from his home to the music art center he attended in Watts. This photograph if you don't recognize is at the bridge that sits above the Metro train right before the 103rd street stop in Watts. The bridge is the crossing path for kids that walk to and from Markham Middle school. I found this picture particularly special because I thought of the people that actually live in Watts and cross that very same bridge on the daily and what their daily commute is like. I can only imagine what the young kids from Markham might think when they see this picture and how this legend will inspire them.

⠀

  • The history of muralism in Los Angeles can be found all around us. Today we take a look at Richard Wyatt's mural 'Cecil', located at the Watts Towers Art Center. This work was painted in 1989 through SPARC's Neighborhood Pride Program. "Cecil' celebrates the late Cecil Fergusen, a community curator and the founder of the Black Arts Council, who spent his life advocating for diversity in art. He began working at the LACMA as a custodian and worked his way up until he became the first African American curator at the museum. ⠀

  • Taking Initiative. Sylvia Urdiano leads by example and creates something bigger than us. It was April 5th 8:45pm when we first learned about her idea. She was hitting us up through the DM, let's create and altar in honor of Nipsey there was no saying no to that one. From suggestion the altar carry a 40oz beer and sage to making a banner this was happening, we got to it. Done with love and respect the altar bloomed. She had a vision that involved creating a space for the community that once didn't exist. A special thanks to the Watts Towers Art center Director Ms. Hooks for allowing it to remain until Nipsey's funeral proceedings. Also to the community of Watts for embracing the altar for being respectful and for adding each and every token of love that they did in honor of Nipsey.
What is next?As an artist.. I hope to follow in Nipsey's steps and I too hope to inspired others. We met so many people that day from reporters to artist community organizations to council member office reps. As friends we have a list of ideas that we often talk about for our communities. As active community members we have an idea that came about as we finished sett the altar up. I mentioned to my friend Elizabeth who lives in Watts that it would be nice to have a playground for the children that visit the towers. She often visits the towers and even volunteered at a flower making booth for the Watts Dia de Los Muertos event. She shared that the kids play on the big rocks that sit adjacent to the towers and agreed it would be nice to have a playground for the kids. The day of Nipsey's funeral proceedings we met reps of LA city councils office @joebuscaino and shared this idea with them by now Elizabeth had tooken the initiative and emailed the council members office some day before with little to no reply. His office reps admired the altar took some pictures and we had a few words on the idea. They liked it and gave us hope of starting a conversation on how we could make this happen. This idea of course needs community approval but I am hopeful that we can at least count on a conversation on the matter. It seems like a grand vision that we hope can become a reality. #nip #wattstowers
